Clean sweep: Flivvers blank both Munising, Norway at home

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford Flivvers girls varsity tennis team swept all 16 matches played at their triangular meet on Sept. 1 at Kingsford High School.

The Flivvers posted seven straight-set wins in their 8-0 victory over Munising to begin the day and then repeated the feat in their 8-0 win over the Norway Knights.

“The team as a whole played great matches today,” Kingsford varsity coach Tracy Rutter said afterwards. “The heat … was a huge factor.

The courts are about 10 degrees hotter than the air temperature. For the most part, the girls all handled it well,” Rutter added.

The lone Flivver to battle with the conditions a bit was No. 2 doubles player Addison Rutter, who with partner Linnea Grubb, played a marathon three-set match. Coach Rutter complimented the Munising team for allowing a short break.

“Addie struggled with the heat, but once we got her cooled down and hydrated, they were ready to roll,” the Flivver coach said.

Addison Rutter and Grubb outlasted Julia Prunick and Dayne Behring 6-1, 4-6, 11-9 in the only close match against the Mustangs. Other than that, Kingsford posted routine wins, led by No. 3 singles Ella Rizzo and No. 4 singles Allette Shanks, who recorded 6-0, 6-1 victories.

In the Norway matchup, Rutter and Grubb, along with No. 3 doubles Aubrey Phillips and Audrey Veale, paced the Flivvers by winning all 12 games in their matches.

Starting at $3.50/week.
