KINGSFORD — The Kingsford Flivvers received wins from their No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles teams but dropped the other five matches in their 5-3 Great Northern Conference match against Gladstone on Wednesday at Kingsford High School.
No. 2 doubles pairing of Addison Rutter and Linnea Grubb and the No. 4 duo of Ava Lovell and Libby Vross led the way with straight-set victories. Rutter-Grubb defeated Reese Herioux and Aliana Martinez 6-4, 6-4, while Lovell-Vross knocked off Mandee Barron and Sam Drielick 6-3, 6-1.
Kingsford’s No. 3 doubles Audrey Veale and Aubrey Philipps went the distance with Gladstone’s Sylvia Nault and Charlotte Hanson before emerging with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-4 victory.
“Our doubles all continue to play very well,” Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said. “They are getting more aggressive and making smart shots. Addie and Linnea at 2 went to deuce eight times during the first set; it was a great, evenly played match, lots of fun to watch.”
The Braves won the other five matches in straight sets. The Flivvers played without No. 1 singles player Ashlyn Blaskowski, who was replaced by Abby Przeslakowski.
“Hats off to (Abby) for stepping in and playing today,” Coach Rutter said. “She had big shoes to fill and did an excellent job. It is very intimidating to get thrown into the lineup, especially at the top spot.
“We have some work to do at singles to get some kinks worked out. Ella Rizzo at No. 3 continues to play very well. She had some great points, rallies and is coming into her game.”
