Flivvers hammer Esky 49-8

KINGSFORD — Kingsford won its second straight Great Northern Conference game in style, as the Flivvers pounded rival Escanaba 49-8 on Homecoming Night on Friday in Kingsford.
Cole Myllyla rushed for two touchdowns, while Alex Rittenhouse, Michael Floriano and Josh Peterson also scored found the endzone to lead the Flivvers to the victory.
“I thought we played very well, offensively and defensively,” Kingsford coach Mark Novara said. “It was just a great team effort.”
Novara’s son Nic, the Kingsford starting quarterback, returned from injury to complete 6 of 7 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown before exiting the game late in the second quarter when the game was all but decided.
Rittenhouse finished with 87 yards on 11 carries and Myllyla wound up with 80 yards on seven carries. Floriano’s touchdown came on a 20-yard run and Peterson’s came on a 17-yard run. Peterson also blocked a punt in the game for Kingsford.
“We were able to run the ball,” Coach Novara said. “The offensive line is coming together nicely. They work together really well, and I’m happy with their progress.”
Nic Nora led Kingsford in receiving with 58 yards.
Novara said the victories over Marquette and Escanaba in the last two weeks may be vital down the line.
“We keep ourselves in the hunt (for the GNC title) but, more importantly, these are playoff points that will set us up for the playoffs.”
The Flivvers will travel across the bridge for their next three games. Kingsford will face Detroit Old Reford in Gaylord on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Flivvers’ next two games will be played in Petoskey — first against Petoskey on Friday, Oct. 7 and then versus Hopkins on Friday, Oct. 14.
