Flivvers sweep doubles matches to nip Maroons

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford varsity girls tennis team went 4-for-4 in the doubles flights and added a victory at No. 1 singles to defeat Menominee 5-3 in a Great Northern Conference match Tuesday in Kingsford.

“We had a great match today with Menominee,” Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said. “The wind was definitely an issue, but overall the girls played great.”

The Flivvers scored straight-set wins in three of the four doubles matches. Three of the matches were highly competitive. At the No. 1 flight, Lexie Vross and Ellyce Doenier toughed out a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Madelyne Barker and Anna Axtel.

“Lexie and Ellyce played their best match of the season so far,” Rutter said. “Doubles as a whole all played really well. We have been working on a few different tactics and today it paid off.”

The No. 3 doubles match went the distance before Audrey Veale and Aubrey Phillips completed their 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback win over Ava Chouinard and Ella Barker.

At No. 4, Libby Vross and Ava Lovell held off Isabelle Bentley and Courtney Buscher 6-4, 7-5. Finally, No. 2 doubles duo Linnea Grubb and Addison Rutter rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gia Vieceli and Ali Wesolowski.

Kingsford’s other victory came off the racket of No. 1 singles Ashlyn Blaskowski, who dispatched Pearl Wellens 6-2, 6-1.

“Ashlyn continues to play her best,” Coach Rutter said. She continues to improve and is mentally ready when she hits the court.”
