NIAGARA 2
SURING — Host Suring wasn’t the only opponent the Niagara girls varsity volleyball team was fighting Tuesday, as the Badgers dropped a hard-fought match in five games.
In a truly see-saw affair, the two teams battled for control, with Suring winning the first (26-16) and third (25-18) games while Niagara evened up the score winning the second (25-18) and fourth (25-13) games of the night.
Suring seized the match by winning the decisive fifth game 15-9.
“We didn’t get off the bus,” said Niagara coach Carol St. Arnauld. “In sets No. 2 and No. 4, we dominated but our inconsistent play got the best of us. My girls are better than they played tonight, so it’s hard not to be disappointed.”
In what might be a lesson for the team’s future success, St. Arnauld added the Badgers need to play with greater confidence and belief in their abilities.
“We need to quit playing timid and play aggressive,” she said. “We have a lot of season left, so we need to push and demand more of ourselves.”
Morgan Borchardt paced the Badgers with double digits in digs (14) and assists (14), while also tallying three aces, four kills and three blocks. Erin Lukowski added 12 digs, five kills, one block and one assist, while Abby Wells chipped in 13 digs, three aces and one kill.
