Local racers chase Triple Crown titles
KINROSS — Local racers will be heading east in pursuit of the Upper Michigan Triple Crown series, with the third and final event of set for Friday night at the Kinross Speedpark.
The U.P. racing series consists of total combined points from three regional racetracks, including the Sands Speedway in Marquette, Norway Speedway and Kinross.
Two rounds of the series — at Marquette and Norway — are already in the books.
Going into the third leg, Joey Pontbriand leads the Super Stock division by four points over Marquette’s Todd Maki heading into action Friday night. Marquette’s Destiny Bullard, who is a regular at Norway Speedway, is fourth place in points.
Pontbriand won the main event in Kinross in the Late Model division in 2017 and is familiar with the track, while Maki is the current weekly point leader at Kinross.
In the Triple Crown Stock Car division, Brian Massicotte of Kingsford leads with 102 points over Gary Thom of Aurora, Wis., who has 101 points.
Norway Speedway’s 2022 Stock Car track champion Joe Ostermann is currently in third with 53 points. Ostermann is a 2-time Triple Crown Champion as he won back-to-back in 2017 and ’18.
In the Late Model division, Bob Goodwin and Darryl Britton, both of Marquette, are both tied with 90 points. Charlie Bell is third with 86 points, while other area racers in the hunt include Reece Gavin of Marquette with 84 points, Norway’s John Ostermann with 77 points, Derek Gagne of Seymour, Wis., with 76 points and Marquette’s Jay Brady with 75 points.
In the Stock 4 division, Devin Farragh will be competing at Kinross as well.
Racing at Kinross starts at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Friday for the Triple Crown Series’ final round.
