KINGSFORD — The Kingsford girls varsity volleyball team needed a fourth match to top visiting Marquette 3-1 on Thursday night.
The host Flivvers started the match winning the first game 25-18 only to have the Lady Redmen take the second 25-22. But it was pretty much all Kingsford the next two games, with the Flivvers winning by scores of 25-17 and 25-18.
“(The match) came down to which team had less errors,” said Flivvers coach Jaclynn Kreider. “We were both struggling to control the tempo and handle the ball.
“Our serving was aggressive and was the difference again tonight. We were able to get on a few different serving runs that caused us to take charge on the set,” the coach added. “I am proud of the girls for battling through a frustrating night. We had some adversity to overcome with an injury in practice last night and some sick kids.”
Kingsford got contributions from a bevy of players, with Alyssa Larson hitting two aces to go with 12 assists, two digs, three kills and one block, and Jenna Viau tallying 13 digs, 12 kills and one ace on the night.
“Jenna Viau played outstanding all-round tonight,” Coach Kreider said. “She is a consistently accurate passer in serve receive and in defense, but tonight she also stepped it up in the front row and was our leading attacker.
“Bryonna Sanders also did a great job as the libero tonight switching her role due to an injury.”
Elaina Bortolini added seven aces, nine digs and five kills for the Flivvers, with Maddy Kreider recording four aces, 13 assists, 15 digs and seven kills in a solid performance on the court.
Also aiding in the match win were Laura Bracket with five aces, two digs, three kills and three blocks; Sanders with one ace, two assists and 14 digs; Kailey Sundquist with one dig and seven kills; and Lexi DalSanto with one dig and one kill.
NORDICS 3, JETS 1
POWERS — After dominating the first two games, North Dickinson coach Taylor Johnson had to remind her girls varsity volleyball team to focus. And the Nordics did exactly that, topping host North Central in four games Thursday night.
Johnson said her players won the opening two games 25-13 and 25-5 on the strength of their serving. While pleased with the wins, the coach added her players became somewhat complacent.
“It was going a little too well,” Johnson said.
That led to the Jets rallying to win the third game 25-23, with the Nordics then having to go to a fourth set for the victory, winning that game 25-17.
Despite the frustration of losing the third set, Johnson said she’s pleased with how her team is playing.
“I feel like we’re getting better,” she said. “Overall, I feel we’re headed in the right direction.”
Micah Lindholm helped fuel the Nordics by tallying 10 kills and four aces, with Aiden Hord adding four kills and nine aces. Lily DePotie chipped in 12 aces and two kills.
WYKONS 3, PATRIOTS 0
IRON RIVER — The West Iron County girls varsity volleyball team was able to celebrate a three-game sweep in front of their home fans Thursday night, beating visiting Westwood 35-21, 25-17 and 25-13.
“Westwood gave us a lot of free points,” said Wykons coach Konnor Bjorkman. “We had a lot of attacks that didn’t lead to points because they were good at getting the ball up.”
Danica Shamion helped pace West Iron with seven kills and four aces, with teammate Calli Calli Pellizzer also chipping in seven kills in the Thursday’s win.
Other contributors for the Wykons included Kali Harty with 10 assists, Haiden Gill and four aces and two kills, and Lauren Shamion five assists.
“I’m excited to see Hancock next week,” Bjorkman added. “I think they will force us to play at the level I know we are capable of. We need some intensity leading to our ‘Pink Out Match’ versus Forest Park the following week.”
