KINGSFORD — The visiting Three Lakes Bluejays might have scored first but it was the Kingsford Flivvers who rallied for a 5-2 boys soccer victory in front of their home fans at Commemorative Field on Tuesday.

The Bluejays tallied the first score just eight minutes into the game when a midfielder passed the ball past the Kingsford defense, setting up the score.

“The Bluejays are a good team, had a quick front and (we weren’t) ready for it,” said Flivvers coach Jeff Gordon.

Kingsford would tie the game with 15 minutes left in the first half. Jaxon Buckley took a long pass from Cedric Henrickson, headed it forward and booted a 10-footer into the Three Lakes goal.

A trio of Flivvers combined to put Kingsford up 2-1 before the half when Buckley passed to Ben Fornetti, who found Marshall Shorkey behind the Bluejays defense for the score.

Kingsford's Kaleb Fornetti (8) uses his head to redirect a kick in the second half.

“Our team is a very young team and we didn’t show that today,” Gordon said. “We had our struggles in the first 25 minutes but then we gained our composure and played our game.

With a great passing game planned and executed we had them frazzled and we kept the ball on their side of the field for most of the second half.”

Kingsford dominated the second half, scoring three goals to put the game out of reach.

Shorkey scored eight minutes into the period on an assist from Buckley. Less than 10 minutes later, Gavin Moore nailed a 30-foot shot with an assist from Ben Fornetti and Gavin Laydon.

Three Lakes looked to regain some momentum when they closed the gap to 4-2 on a penalty kick. But Moore again gave Kingsford a three-goal lead when he tallied the final goal on an assist from Buckley.

Gordon praised defenders Fornetti, Henrickson, Nathan Kenny and Jacob Crockford, who allowed just six shots on goal in the second half, as well as goalie Landon Adam.

“One of his saves, he reached to block a goal, then dove for the ball to keep it from going into the net,” Gordon said. “Our freshman goalie played very well and when he dove to save the ball from going into the net it gave him great confidence. It will be fun to watch him grow more in the position.”

The Flivvers travel to take on Houghton today.
