Tripp, Axley pace Storm at Crandon Invite
CRANDON, Wis. — The new co-op Northwoods Storm cross country team, combining Florence and Niagara high schools, competed in the Crandon Invitational on Tuesday and the girls led the way with a third-place finish.
Senior Abbey Tripp paced the Northwoods Storm girls with a seventh-place finish, running a 24:12.3. Freshman Ingrid Holt wound up 16th in 27:35.20, while senior Caitlyn Kelley placed 21st in 29:48.10, junior Leighton Lambert finished 24th in 30:48.20 and senior Rebecca Eller ran a time of 35:00.8.
Crandon won the girls title with 19 points, with Oconto at 53 and Northwoods Storm with 61. Kallie Volk of Three Lakes won the individual crown in a time of 21:55.7.
In the boys event, the Northwoods Storm did not have the five runners needed to field a complete team.
Individually, senior Seth Axley led the way for Northwoods Storm with a 10th-place finish in 20:47.2. Senior Blake Smith was next up in 11th in 21:07.5 and senior Matt Bousley placed 22nd in 23:02.7.
Oconto took the team championship with 25 points, while Crandon finished second with 34. Crandon sophomore Taylor Karcz topped all competitors with a time of 17:12.40, nearly two minutes in front of his nearest challenger.
In all, Northwoods co-coach Jim Cihak said his team had a “strong showing.”
