IRON RIVER — The West Iron County girls tennis team heads into the Great Northern Conference championships tournament today coming off a four-match winning streak, which included their 8-0 victory over Norway on Monday at the Nelson Field tennis courts.

With the victory, the Wykons finished their dual-match regular season at 5-7-1.

“The team is starting to round into shape with the tournaments approaching,” WIC coach Joe Serbentas said. “The GNCs will be a nice tune-up before the U.P. tournament next week on Thursday.

“The seniors had a nice finish to their regular season today and are hungry going into the final stretch. The leadership from the seniors has been fantastic all season and their final home match was just what I expected going in.”

West Iron swept all 12 sets played. The Wykons won the No. 4 singles and No. 4 doubles matches by forfeit.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Callista Bortolameolli and Lillie Schmutzler led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mary Cavagnetto and Sadie Powell.

“Callista and Lillie played a very good, mostly error-free match today,” Serbentas said.

Senior Autumn Smith and sophomore Kaitlyn Smith scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jayda Hunter and Kerri Krupazak at No. 2 doubles, while senior Bailey Hoffart and Aubrey Richardson knocked off Mackenzie Crownover and Marley Toby 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

“Autumn Smith and Bailey Hoffart did a really nice job keeping the ball on angles and looked focused today,” Serbentas said.

Senior No. 4 singles Taylor Bett won her match by forfeit to round out West Iron’s senior winners against the Knights.

In the other singles matches, Aubrey Bice defeated Donna VanHolla 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Seanna Stine upended Emma Dube 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Alex Hanson beat Ella Wojtowicz 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Destiny Lemery and Olivia Lamay won their No. 4 doubles match by forfeit.

“We are looking forward to the challenge ahead with confidence,” Serbentas said.

MOUNTAINEERS 5, MAROONS 3

MENOMINEE — Iron Mountain swept the singles flights and added a win at No. 1 doubles to defeat Menominee 5-3 on Monday in Menominee.

Iron Mountain coach Marcus Celello said his team has become road warriors.

“The girls did a great job today with yet another road win,” he said. “The way a team performs on the road says a lot about them, and we have had a very road-heavy schedule this year.”

The closest match on the day featured Iron Mountain’s Natalia Brown against Menominee’s Elena Murphy. Brown won the first set easily at 6-1, but Murphy fought back to take the second set 6-3. Brown finished off her victory with a 6-3 win in the final set.

“She has been challenged often this year, and it was great to see her bounce back after dropping the second set,” Celello said of Brown.

No. 1 singles player Callie Bianco defeated Lola Doyle 6-3, 6-0, No. 2 singles Aziza Burgoon stayed unbeaten with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Mackenzie Doyle and No. 4 singles Rediet Husing rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Maddy Kamin.

“All of our singles players continued their strong seasons,” Celello said.

No. 1 doubles duo Elle Lofholm and Anja Kleiman posted the Mountaineers’ other victory by defeating Madelyne Barker and Anna Axtel 6-2, 6-0.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to face Ironwood today and then travel to Negaunee for the Mid-Peninsula Conference championships on Thursday.

“Our marathon of a season is now turning into a sprint, and we’re ready to go compete,” Celello said.

REDETTES 7, FLIVVERS 1

KINGSFORD — The Marquette Redettes swept the singles matches and took three of the four doubles flights in their 7-1 victory over host Kingsford on Monday.

Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said the individual match scores and the final team score did not reflect the way her team played.

“Marquette has a strong team,” Rutter said. “(Our) team as a whole all played very well.”

Kingsford’s No. 2 doubles pairing of Addison Rutter and Linnea Grubb outlasted Hosanna Brindle and Maija Parkonen 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to record the Flivvers’ lone win.

“No. 2 doubles team played awesome tennis today,” Coach Rutter said. “When they are on, they are on. It was a great match to watch.”

Rutter credited Janousek and Shanks for their efforts.

“Paige came back to close the gap in the first set,” Coach Rutter said of Janousek, who fell to Annabella Martinson 6-3, 6-2. “She’s a strong player and has continually improved with each match.

“Allette had a long first set, resulting in back-to-back flip-flopping of points, deuces and long volleys.”

Shanks dropped a 7-5 (7), 6-1 decision to Natalie Deneau.
