Broncos sweep Nordics
HARRIS — Seniors Carley Varoni and Kaylee Red Bear enjoyed big nights at the net Tuesday, helping the Bark River-Harris Broncos post a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-13) varsity volleyball victory over the North Dickinson Nordics.
Varoni collected 10 kills and Red Bear added nine kills and two blocks in the Skyline Central Conference matchup.
“North Dickinson served well but our girls dug up the ball well on serve ,” said BR-H coach Jen Ives.
The Nordics were within 17-13 following a Broncos’ passing error in the finale.
A kill by Red Bear gave the host Broncos a sideout and five-point lead, helping them close that set.
“We had some shining moments,” said Nordics coach Taylor Johnson. “We were hoping our runs would last a little longer. Carley played phenomenal in the middle and Kaylee played real well for them. Carley being a left-hander created some match-up problems for us. There was a little uncertainly about who was supposed cover which position on the floor. We knew they’d be tough.”
The Broncos gained a 12-5 cushion on a Nordics’ hitting error in the third before the Nordics trimmed their deficit to 12-8 on three consecutive miscues.
Back-to-back kills by Varoni and an addition kill by junior Mckenzie Hoffmeyer helped BR-H gain a 16-8 advantage.
The Nordics pulled within 16-12 on four-hit infraction by BR-H. The Broncos, however, didn’t allow them to get any closer.
In the opener, the Broncos were clinging to a 14-12 lead after a hitting error.
Red Bear gave them a three-point cushion with a block on senior Micah Lindholm. The Broncos then cashed in on three miscues for an insurmountable 19-13 advantage.
The Nordics scored the first two points in the second set, but were foiled by a hitting miscue.
Hoffmeyer then served for six straight points as the Broncos surged to a 7-2 lead.
A kill by Lindholm provided a sideout for the Nordics before the Broncos began to pull away.
Lindholm finished with at least four blocks for the Nordics, who are idle until Oct. 20 when they host Forest Park.
“I’m pleased with our overall effort,” said Johnson. “We’ll see them again in two weeks. We know what we have to work on. Micah did a nice job at the net and Aiden (Hord) slowed the ball down which was very helpful.”
