Cross country runners complete at NC Invite

POWERS — North Central’s Hope Varoni and Holy Name’s Joe Carlson became first-time individual winners in the North Central Invitational cross country meet hosted in Powers on Monday.

Varoni, who runs for the Jets through a co-op venture, became the first Bark River-Harris student to win a varsity cross country event on what turned out to be a chilly and blustery day.

She covered the 3.1-mile course in 22 minutes, 24 seconds, followed by Stephenson’s Kayela Putnam (22:36) and Superior Central’s Maddie Begovac (22:45).

The Knights had two runners place in the top 10 of the girls division race, with Lauren Adams crossing the finishing line in fourth place (22:53) and Taylor Adams finishing sixth (Norway, 24:04).

In the boys division, Carlson captured top honors with a time of 18:28, followed by Stephenson’s Griffin Brown (19:42) and Jacob Ross (20:01).

Brent Lagina was Norway’s top runner, taking 10th in 21:15.

In the team standings, the Stephenson boys won with 35 points, followed by North Central 60 and Superior Central 76. Norway was fifth in the team standings with 85 points.

Stephenson’s girls edged Superior Central 46-48 for the title and were followed by third-place Rapid River scored 73 points, Rapid River (4th, 73 points), Norway (5th 94 points) and Forest Park (6th, 126 points).

The season ends with the Upper Peninsula Finals at Flat Rock on Saturday at 11 a.m.
