Fast times: Adams finishes 6th, Varoni 12th at UP CC Finals
GLADSTONE — Norway freshman Lauren Adams led all area runners with a sixth-place finish in the Division 3 girls championship at Saturday’s U.P. Cross Country Finals.
Adams finished the course in a time of 22:31.11 to place in the top 10. North Central sophomore Hope Varoni took 12th in the Division 2 race, recording a 23:22.41.
On the boys side, the top local runner was North Central sophomore Weston Knauf, who took 16th in the D2 race with a 19:45.93.
Kingsford, North Central and Norway competed in the boys events, while the Flivvers, the Jets, the Knights and Forest Park competed in the girls events.
In Division 1, the Flivver boys finished seventh with 179 points, behind team champion Marquette (29). Kingsford senior Ethan Congdon led his team with a 18:46.25, good for 21st place. Sophomore Joey Lundholm finished 27th (19:23.20), senior Michael Mulligan took 34th (19:52.24), senior Isaac Olsen wound up 43rd (20:47.91) and sophomore Joshua Cameron placed 57th (23:35.11).
Sault Ste. Marie freshman Gabe Litzner won the Division 1 boys individual crown in 16:41.55, the fastest time in any division.
For the Flivver girls, sophomore Iona Shilton led the way with a 25:27.99 for 42nd. Sophomore Taylor Olsen took 53rd (28:28.69) and sophomore Lily Villringer placed 54th (30:51.50).
Kingsford did not have enough runners to compete in the team competition. Marquette edged Houghton 35-37 to win the team trophy, while Houghton freshman Tessa Rautiola won the race with a time of 20:00.11, which was the fastest time among all three girls divisions.
In Division 2, the North Central boys had two other competitors beside Knauf – senior Jesse Sampson took 17th (20:03.69) and sophomore Alex Pipkorn placed 24th (20:48.73). The Jets did not field enough runners to compete for the team championship, which was won by Painesdale-Jeffers. P-J senior Tavin Larson took first overall with a time of 17:43.83.
In the Division 2 girls event, the Jets placed third with 68 points. Hancock won the title with 23 points, while Ishpeming finished runner-up with 40.
Apart from Varoni, NC sophomore Maddy Corrigan finished 24th (25:52.36), junior Faith Javurek took 28th (27:46.12), sophomore Ella Riley wound up 29th (28:49.07) and junior Julia Olsen finished 31st (30:17.77).
Ishpeming junior Lola Korpi won the D2 individual title with a 20:18.81.
In the Division 3 boys race, Norway senior Brent Lagina led his team with a 21:13.91 for 35th place. Sophomore Sean Dowrick finished 36th (21:14.13) and sophomore AJ Gallino placed 59th (22:27.55).
The Knights were unable to field a complete team. Stephenson brought home the team trophy with 77 points, while Dollar Bay’s Amos Norland won the individual crown with a 16:44.18.
In the Division 3 girls race, Norway senior Taylor Adams placed 23rd with a 24:26.33 and Forest Park’s Tatum Clark finished 32nd in 25:29.15. Neither squad competed in the team event, which was won by Munising with 25 points.
Newberry’s Samantha Taylor was the D3 girls champion, finishing the course in 20:06.34.
