MARQUETTE — The Kingsford Flivvers used a tight first-set victory to spark their 3-0 win (25-23, 25-17, 25-18) over Marquette in a Great Northern Conference match on Thursday at Marquette Senior High School.

“We started out so in control and disciplined in set 1, then about halfway through that set lost control,” Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider said. “I’m not sure exactly what happened, but we did not look like the same team.

“We battled and were able to pull out the win, which was critical for us as the whole night could have been different if we would have lost that set.”

Standout sophomore Maddie Kreider led the Flivvers in four categories in the victory. Kreider recorded 15 kills, 15 assists, 10 digs (tied with Ellery Nash) and three aces.

Sophomore middle hitter Kailey Sundquist put down six kills, while Elaina Bortolini and Anna Bortolini added four each and Lexi DalSanto contributed three.

Sundquist also led Kingsford in blocks with three and posted two aces and Alyssa Larson dealt out 13 assists.

Defensively, in addition to Nash and Kreider, Jenna Viau recorded eight digs and Larson chipped in with six.

“Getting a win in Marquette always feels good,” Coach Kreider said. “They are so well-coached and have shown a ton of improvement since we saw them last.

“It’s been a long exhausting week to end our conference play, so I’m looking forward to regrouping and refocusing next week,” Kreider added.

The Flivvers host Forest Park on Tuesday, Oct. 25, and then entertain Houghton on Thursday, Oct. 27, to conclude their regular season. Kingsford will begin tournament play on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with a home match against Negaunee.

BULLDOGS 3, MOUNTAINEERS 1

IRON MOUNTAIN — After two sets, the Iron Mountain Mountaineers stood even with West Pac Conference foe Hancock on Thursday night, but the Bulldogs ran away with the third set and went on to defeat the Mountaineers 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18) on Senior Night at Mountaineer Gym.

“Hancock’s game was strengthening as the match went into the third and fourth set, keeping momentum on their side,” IM coach Jeanne Newberry said.

Newberry credited Chloe Maycroft, Ellison Powell and Emily Copley for their net play, both hitting and blocking. She also praised senior setters Leah Winch and Emma Ellis as well as back-row plays by Belle Tregillis, Shyanne Pearce and Izzy Lewis.

Mountaineers honored on Senior Night included Tregillis, Ellis, Powell, Pearce, Maycroft, Winch and Isadora Carmo.

Iron Mountain finishes its regular season next week with a home match against Westwood on Tuesday. The Mountaineers open Division 3 district play on Monday, Oct. 31 at home against Menominee.

LADY TROJANS 3, NORDICS 1

AT FELCH TOWNSHIP — The Forest Park Lady Trojans jumped out to a two-set lead en route to a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18) over North Dickinson in a Skyline Central Conference match Thursday at North Dickinson High School.

“Definitely wasn’t our best night,” FP coach Bobbie Anderson said. “We played on our heals and were inconsistent. However, it was a conference win, and any win against a tough opponent is worth celebrating.”

Junior outside hitter Ema Stepien led the Lady Trojans with 16 kills, while freshman Ava Fischer fired eight aces. Stepien produced 11 digs and three aces, while Fischer’s stat line included seven kills, six digs and a block.

Charlie Larson topped FP in assists with 28, while also adding five digs. Middle hitter Leah Feldhausen recorded seven kills and added a block, Audrey Franz contributed eight digs and two blocks and Ashlynn Kannich finished with 13 digs.

“They’re a very strong team,” North Dickinson coach Taylor Johnson said of the Lady Trojans. “(But) I think we played so much better than we did against them the first time we played them this year.”

Micah Lindholm led the Nordics with 13 kills, one block, three aces and 15 digs, while Aiden Hord chipped in 12 kills and 18 digs. Hord, Gabby Schultz (17 assists) and Mya Grunlund (15 digs) were all 100% at the serving line.

“We played them tough. We stuck with them,” Johnson added. “I was really pleased with our effort.”
