KINGSFORD — It’s axiomatic in soccer that if a team controls the midfield, it will likely control the match.
The Kingsford Flivvers boys varsity soccer team did just that against visiting Houghton on Thursday en route to a 6-3 victory over the Gremlins on “Senior Night” at Commemorative Field.
Gavyn Laydon scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Flivvers. Marshall Shorkey and Jaxon Buckley also netted two goals each, while Gavin Moore and Cedric Henrickson added two assists apiece.
Ben Fornetti and Jacob Crockford recorded an assist each.
“Our mids, Jamie Lowe, Gavin Moore and Gavyn Laydon, did a great job controlling the ball in the center of the field and made good passes for easy scores,” Kingsford coach Jeff Gordon said.
Shorkey put Kingsford up just two minutes into the game off an assist from Laydon.
Two minutes later, Buckley doubled the lead off assists from Laydon and Fornetti.
The Flivvers kept the pressure on with another tally eight minutes into the contest when Laydon scored from 20 feet out after a long pass from Crockford.
Shorkey added his second goal of the opening half, assisted by Moore.
Gordon was impressed with his defenders, too.
“Our defense, James Cain, Ben Fornetti, Jacob Crockford, and Cedric Henrickson, played strong and only allowed three shots on goal in the first half,” he said. “They do a great job backing each other up and make it hard for our competitors to score or get shots.”
Kingsford upped their lead to 5-2 four minutes into the second half when Laydon recorded his second of the match. Henrickson notched the assist on a throw-in.
Buckley then finished off Kingsford’s scoring, from Moore and Henrickson.
The victory had added importance for Kingsford’s seniors.
“It was a good day for our seniors on Senior Night,” Gordon said. “Marshall Shorkey, Trent Maki, Jami Lowe and James Cain (got) some good playing time during the game together.”
MOUNTAINEERS 3, GREMLINS 1
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain might have let Houghton score the first goil in their varsity matchup Tuesday at Mountaineer Stadium, but it was all Mountaineers after that.
Iron Mountain (3-6) scored the game’s final three goals for a 3-1 win.
The Gremlins tallied the first goal of the match 13 minutes into the first half, with the Mountaineers answering that with 9:18 on the clock before intermission. That’s when Alex Wilson scored on assists by Carson McClain and Anthony Pineda.
Two minutes later Matt Richer headed in a corner kick from Will Fairchild. Iron Mountain added an insurance goal 25 minutes into the second half when Pineda drilled a loose ball into the net.
“(Our) defense and midfield played aggressively, limiting Houghton’s scoring chances,” IM coach Greg Kulas said. “Goalkeeper Tyler Winch had another strong game in the net.”
The Mountaineers next game is Monday night at home vs Peshtigo on Senior Night.
