Flivvers start fast, finish off Maroons

MENOMINEE — The Kingsford Flivvers stormed out to a quick two sets lead, and after a brief stumble in the third, defeated Menominee 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 22-25, 25-22) in a Great Northern Conference varsity volleyball matchup Monday.

Maddie Kreider smacked 12 kills and Elaina Bortolini hit 11 for the Flivvers, who finished with 38 kills in the match.

“Started out the night fast and in control,” Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider said. “We played relaxed and had a lot of fun in the first two sets.”

But as has often been the case in similar situations during the season, the Flivvers let up after dominating early. The Maroons took advantage and pushed the match to a fourth set with a three-point win in the third set.

Kreider said her team became “too comfortable” in the third, adding that Menominee’s top attackers got hot during the set. She also complimented the Maroons’ defense for picking up “a ton of balls” during the comeback.

“We started to second guess ourselves and a lack of confidence took over,” Coach Kreider said. “Unfortunately, the mental hurdle for our young team is what is holding us back. Hopefully we can figure it out soon.”

As they’ve done previously, the Flivvers shook off the dip in their play and rebounded to take the match in four.

“We have continued to be successful despite the self-doubt, but I know we have more yet we haven’t shown,” the Kingsford coach said.

Aside for their hitting prowess, the Flivvers served well, firing 17 aces in the match. Kreider led the way with five, while Bortolini and Ellery Nash contributed four each.

Kreider and Alyssa Larson directed the offense with 16 assists apiece. Laura Bracket finished with six kills, while Kailey Sundquist and Alexis DalSanto produced five each.

Defensively, Nash led Kingsford with 15 digs to go with 11 from Kreider, nine from Jenna Viau and seven by Bryonna Sanders. Sundquist recorded four blocks, Bracket posted two and Bortolini added one.
