Lucky No. 7: Mountaineers run by Ishpeming 28-8
ISHPEMING — Matthew Colavecchi broke off an 89-yard touchdown run right before halftime to spark Iron Mountain to its seventh straight win, a 28-8 West Pac Conference triumph Friday over host Ishpeming.
Colavecchi’s burst helped give Iron Mountain a 14-8 lead at the break after the Hematites opened the game with a touchdown drive and a 2-point conversion on their first possession.
“They executed what they wanted to do, and we had a few breakdowns on the defensive side of the ball,” Iron Mountain coach Robin Marttila said. “We just played better on both sides of the ball in the second half.”
Bradon Farragh scored two touchdowns, while Luke Wolfe added another for the Mountaineers, ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Division 8 state poll and No. 3 in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters 11-player poll.
Bradon Walstrom added a 2-point conversion in the victory.
Iron Mountain added a touchdown in the third quarter and wrapped up the scoring with another TD in the fourth.
Matthew Colavecchi finished with 101 yards on four carries for IM. Wolfe carried nine times for 63 yards, Walstrom produced 43 yards on three attempts and Farragh finished with 26 yards on nine carries.
“It was a wet soggy field,” Marttila said. “There was a lot of precipitation during the day and the field was wet during the game.”
The Mountaineers attempted just five passes in the game. Starting quarterback Joe Colavecchi completed three of those for 41 yards, one for 35 yards to his cousin Matthew and two to Walstrom for six yards.
Iron Mountain travels to Manistique (2-6) for its regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 21. The Mountaineers figure to host at least one playoff game in the MHSAA Division 8 playoffs, which start the week after.
“We weren’t happy with the way we started against Ishpeming,” Marttila said. “We can’t do that in the playoffs.”
FLIVVERS 46, VIKINGS 7
PETOSKEY — Kingsford made sure there was no question which team was coming out on top Friday night, putting up 20 points in the opening stanza on its way to a crushing 46-7 victory in Petoskey.
If the first quarter wasn’t enough, the Flivvers (6-2) kept pouring it on, adding another 12 points in the second quarter and 14 in the third. Hopkins (5-3) finally got on the board with a touchdown in the final 12 minutes of play.
“We just took it to them,” said Kingsford coach Mark Novara. “We just pinned them down.
“Our offense was rolling and our defense was phenomenal,” he added. “We didn’t have any turnovers, which is critical for us.”
Senior running back Cole Myllyla helped power the rout by rushing for 141 yards on just 13 carries and scoring twice, while sophomore quarterback Nic Novara hit on 7 of 12 passing attempts for 134 and a touchdown to junior wideout Cardel Morton.
Coach Novara said senior Nic Nora again showed his versatility by tallying more than 100-yards receiving, while also being a threat in other phases of the game.
“He’s a dynamic player,” the coach said. “Running the ball, catching it, returning kicks and on defense. He’s just a special, special player.”
Even the Kingsford defense got in on the fun, with junior Noah Johnson returning an interception for a score. It was one of three turnovers committed by the Vikings.
The Flivvers close out their season on Friday at home against Menominee (4-4).
Coach Novara said, while Kingsford is already headed to the state playoffs, a win against Menominee would have its benefits.
“A win might give us a No. 1 seed and two home games,” he said. “That’d be really nice.”
