Prep volleyball: Lady Trojans sweep Knights
CRYSTAL FALLS — Leah Feldhausen smacked 11 kills and Charlie Larson handed out 16 assists and recorded five digs to help lead Forest Park varsity volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-11) Skyline Central Conference victory over Norway on Thursday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
The girls played hard tonight and stuck to our game plan,” FP coach Bobbie Anderson said. “They played aggressively for three sets. We have some tough games ahead, so hopefully we continue to play at a high level against hard competition.”
Forest Park freshmen Ava Fischer and Elsie Williams showed some of their promise with fine efforts. Fischer finished with five kills and a dig and Williams wound up with two kills and two aces.
Our freshmen, Ava Fischer and Elsie Williams, were key factors in tonight’s win as well,” Anderson said. “They stepped it up and I’m really proud of them.”
Libera Ashlynn Kannich led the Lady Trojans in aces with five, while sophomore middle Audrey Franz fired four. Ema Stepien chipped in with three kills, while Lauren Kudwa added two kills.
Anderson talked about two of her main contributors.
“Leah Feldhausen had a fantastic game tonight,” Anderson said. “She is a force to reckon with and tonight she was unstoppable.
“Often I think we forget to give credit to our setter Charlie Larson,” the coach added. “She runs our offense and does a wonderful job getting the ball where it needs to be.”
BADGERS 3, TIGERS 0
GILLETT, Wis. — Niagara took quick control of its varsity volleyball match against Gillett on Thursday, then the Lady Badgers made things somewhat difficult on themselves in the third set before recording a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18) M&O Conference victory over the Tigers.
“Tonight we dominated the first set,” Niagara coach Carol St. Arnauld said. “Our setups were on point. We continued through set two with the same mentality but started to get too comfortable and Gillett took advantage.
“While we won the three sets, we need to stay competitive and keep our heads in the game until the final whistle blows.”
Morgan Borchardt topped the Lady Badgers with 13 kills, 19 assists and seven digs. Abby Wells added seven kills, seven digs, four assists and two aces, while Mallory Sanicki contributed seven kills, two assists and two digs.
Erin Lukowicz chipped in with five aces, five digs, three kills and two assists, Emma Brasure recorded seven digs, three kills and three assists and Raegan Frappier posted 10 digs and three assists.
St. Arnauld spoke afterward about the improvements she wants from her team as the regular season winds down.
“Serving and serve receive need some polishing, and we definitely will be focusing on those skills in upcoming practices,” she said. “This team wants to win and I know that they will give everything they have to accomplish that goal.”
NORDICS 3, JETS 0
FELCH — North Dickinson simply flew by the visiting North Central Jets for a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-16, 25-14) in the Skyline Central Conference at North Dickinson County High School on Thursday night.
Nordics coach Taylor Johnson said her team took control early, allowing her to expand her normal rotation and get more of her bench playing time.
“It was pretty nice,” she said. “It was a fun game.”
Micah Lindholm paced the winning effort with 11 kills, two assists, six aces, five digs and one block.
Other contributors for North Dickinson (7-4) included Aiden Hord with four kills, three aces, two assists and six digs, Lily DePotie with three kills, three aces, three digs and 100% serving, and Gabby Schultz with 14 assists, six aces and two digs.
MINERS 3, WYKONS 2
IRON RIVER — West Iron captured the first two sets against visiting Negaunee, but couldn’t sustain its momentum as the Wykons fell to the Miners 3-2 (27-29, 13-25, 25-15, 27-25, 16-14) on Thursday in a West Pac Conference match at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium
Danica Shamion led West Iron with 14 kills and seven aces. Calli Pellizzer and Kaylah Hill recorded six kills each and Haiden Gill added five.
Senior setter Kali Harty totaled 29 assists.
