Still perfect: Jets remain undefeated, blank Nordics

FELCH — Luke Gorzinski and the North Central Jets didn’t wait long to show who was boss in Friday night’s Great Lakes Eight Conference-West clash against host North Dickinson.

Gorzinski torched the Nordics’ defense for a 55-yard scoring run just 16 seconds into the game, as the visiting Jets (7-0) pushed their record 8-player win streak to 30 games with a 55-0 victory.

And, the Jets star was far from done.

In just the first quarter, Gorzinski also threw three TD passes — a 53-yard strike to Dylan Plunger, 42-yard score to Ashton Fleetwood and 17-yard TD pass to Lane Gorzinski — as North Central flew out to a 34-0 lead by the end of the quarter and held a commanding 48-0 advantage over the Nordics (0-7) at the half.

Luke Gorzinski would end the game with 189 yards in total offense, including a perfect 5 for 5 throwing the ball for 134 yards and the three first quarter touchdowns.

The Jets also got rushing scores from Jacob Gorzinski (2 carries, 41 yards, 1 TD) and Owen Chartier (1 carry, 4 yards, 1 TD), as well as a pair of touchdowns on punt returns by Jacob Gorzinski (60 yards) and Elijah Gorzinski (55 yards).

Kicker Adrian Mercier hit all five of his point-after attempts.

As dominant as the Jets were offensively, they might have had an even better night defensively holding North Dickinson to -16 yards in total offense.

Jordan Messenger led North Central with four tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack, while teammates Drew Allgeyer (4 tackles, 2 TFL), Andrew Webber (3.5 tackles, 1 TFL), Dillon Raab (3 tackles, team-high 2.5 TFL) and Max Nason (2.5 tackles, 2 TFL) helped hold the Nordics scoreless.

TROJANS 56, GLADIATORS 34

ONTONAGON — The Forest Park Trojans proved to be true road warriors, topping host Ontonagon in Friday night’s 56-34 shootout between the two Great Lakes Eight Conference-West rivals.

“Very happy with the overall team performance,” said Forest Park coach Brian Fabbri of the 8-player matchup. “We had a lot of players step up in big situations and make plays on offense and defense.”

The Trojans (6-1) never trailed, with standout running back Sam McKissack (17 carries, 150 yards, 2 TDs) started the scoring with 25-yard run and Felix Quevedo (12 carries, 99 yards, 2 TDs) helping give Forest Park a 16-0 advantage with a five-yards TD carry.

The second quarter was an offensive explosion, as Forest Park and the Gladiators (3-4) combined for 54 points.

The Trojans got the better of the scoring binge, with McKissack finding the endzone for a second time on a two-yard run and it ending with a 20-yard TD romp by quarterback Payton Woollard (6 carries, 21 yards, 1 TD). In between, Quevedo managed to score both an offensive touchdown on a 31-yard run and then returning a fumble 30 yards for a score.

Forest Park’s Nikolas Stephens (15 carries, 93 yards, 1 TD) completed the scoring with a 20-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

“Kevin Giuiliani blocked very well all game and provided plenty of room for a rushing attack that totaled 377 yards on 52 attempts,” Fabbri said.

With the success of the Trojans’ running game, Woollard threw just twice in the road win, hitting one pass for 47 yards to Will Curtis (2 catches, 69 yards). Stephens and McKissack were both 1 for 1 passing.

Defensively, Devon Basirico led the charge for Forest Park with 10 tackles, including eight solo, and one quarterback sack. Quevedo and Adan Brazieka each had six tackles, with Curtis tallying five hits and a sack.

“Ontonagon was very well coached and stuck to their game plan to spread us out and throw the ball around,” Fabbri said. “Defensively, we were able to get pressure most of the game by using quicker players on the defensive line, including Brazieka and Basirico.”

Ontonagon attempted 41 total passes during the game.

“Ontonagon has a young QB and he is very athletic and gives his receivers a chance to catch a lot of passes,” Fabbri added. “We need to continue to work on our pass coverage and keep cleaning up offensive execution and looking forward to playing Ironwood at home next week.”

BLUEJAYS 80, BADGERS 6

THREE LAKES — The Niagara Badgers had a long trip home Friday night after an 80-6 loss to host Three Lakes in a Northern Border Conference 8-player football clash.

Already leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Bluejays (5-2) exploded for 44 points in the second stanza to put the game out of reach.

The visiting Badgers (1-6) finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Tommy Martin found teammate Logan Weber, who started the game at quarterback for Niagara, on an 11-yard scoring strike.

“We switched out QBs in the second half, so (Weber) was a receiver when he caught it,” Niagara coach Sean McGrath said of the play. “He’s kind of been our utility man this season.”

Weber ended up leading the Badgers with 117 yards in total offense, including five catches for 80 yards and the team’s lone touchdown.

Defensively, Christian Hedmark had a part in 17 tackles, while fellow Badgers Edward Swanson and Andar Olson each tallied 8 tackles.

“There were plenty of positive things to takeaway from the game,” McGrath said. “Now it will be a matter of building on those positives for next week.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
