CRYSTAL FALLS — The West Iron County Wykons fought back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat the Forest Park Lady Trojans 25-18, 21-25, 26-28, 25-17, 15-10 on Tuesday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Wykons earned a season sweep against their Iron County rival. West Iron defeated the Lady Trojans in three sets on Sept. 27 in Iron River.

The rematch was the latest example of what makes the rivalry what it is.

“It was a fun match tonight,” FP coach Bobbie Anderson said. “Both teams played extremely hard and put on a great show. I’m proud of how our girls played. We were down many times throughout the five sets and we worked our way back. Unfortunately, West Iron had less mental errors and did a better job serving.”

Sophomore middle Audrey Franz agreed with her coach.

“We played hard but had some mental errors,” she said. “We played smarter in the second and third set. It was a big game and I’m proud of how well we played. We only have three losses in regular season, and I think if we play hard like we did tonight, we should have a fun the last few games.”

KINGSFORD — In a preview of a potential Division 2 District 33 final, Escanaba knocked off Kingsford 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18 in a Great Northern Conference match on Tuesday at Kingsford High School.

“We are getting closer,” Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider said. “I enjoy competitive matches like tonight even though the outcome did not fall in our favor. We had some really good plays and stretches, but unfortunately we weren’t able to stay consistent. We allowed our errors at times to give them runs that they should not have had.”

The Flivvers, who lost just their second dual match of the season, recorded 33 kills in the match. Maddie Kreider led the way with nine, followed by Kailey Sundquist with seven and Elaina Bortolini and Lexi DalSanto with four each.

Kreider also paced Kingsford in assists with 18 and aces with five. Ellery Nash posted a team-high 22 digs, while Jenna Viau contributed 13.

Laura Bracket notched two blocks and Bortolini added one. Allysa Larson played well as well, finishing with 11 assists, eight digs and two aces.

“We know we have gotten better and yet still can do better,’ Coach Kreider said. “We will work hard these next two weeks and be ready for them in districts.”

The Flivvers, who will host the district, get a first-round bye before facing Negaunee in a semifinal on Nov. 2. Escanaba meets rival Gladstone in the first round on Monday, Oct. 31, with the winner matching up against Houghton on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The final is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 3.

CARNEY — Serving and passing were the keys for the Carney-Nadeau Wolves in a 3-0 (25-7, 25-22, 25-16) volleyball victory over the Norway Knights in Carney on Tuesday night.

“We came out firing on all cylinders, then we struggled with serve receives in the second set.” said C-N coach Steve Kedsch. “We were down 9-2, then we started getting good serves and passes to our setter which turned the momentum in our favor. The third set was kind of a repeat of the second.”

Samantha Kedsch led the Wolves with six service aces and 16 assists. Mariska Laurila tallied five aces and six kills. Hailey DeGrave added four aces and nine kills. Marissa Thompson also had four aces and Elodie Lenca finished with four kills and eight digs.

Starting at $4.00/week.
