Twice as nice: IM grapplers grab 2nd straight Mid-Pen title

ISHPEMING — If once was good, twice was better. That might be the motto of the Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team after winning the Mid-Peninsula Conference championships for the second consecutive year on Saturday at Ishpeming High School.

The Mountaineers compiled 93 points to grab the top spot in the eight-team field, beating out runnerup Negaunee (86) by seven points and third-place Ishpeming (66) by 27 points.

“Back-to-back conference champs,” said IM coach Cory McLaren. “Nice win for us as a team and hopefully we can keep this momentum going through districts and regionals.”

Seven Mountaineers won their respective weight classes including Shayna Hruska (106), Alex Wilson (113), Tyler Winch (126), Daniel Manier (132), Shawn McGuire (138), Evan Haferkorn (150) and Fulton Stroud (165).

Di’Angelo Saldana (120) and Alek Jokinen (106) to the team’s medal tally by taking second and third, respectively.
