IM sluggers fall to Esky 14-4
ESCANABA — Iron Mountain just couldn’t keep up with host Escanaba in a varsity baseball clash Wednesday, as the Eskymos ran away from the Mountaineers for a dominating 14-4 victory in five innings.
Escanaba scored four runs in the first inning, with the Mountaineers finally responding with a three-run outburst in the third to close the gap to just one run. But the Eskymos put seven more on the board in the bottom half of the inning and another three in the fourth for a commanding 14-3 lead.
IM starter Carson McLean struggled early, allowing four runs and walking three in just two-thirds of an inning. Nico Burgoon (1.1 innings, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 Ks), Evan Haferkorn (1 inning, 3 ERs, 7 BBs, 2 Ks) and Ian Marttila (1 inning, 2 Rs,) pitched in relief for the Mountaineers.
Haferkorn also had Iron Mountain’s lone hit, a double in the third inning that drove in McLean and Gerald Sampoll Torres, both of whom had drawn walks.
