IM tennis topped by Miners 8-0
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain boys tennis team took on one of the U.P. Division 1 favorites Wednesday when Negaunee came to town and the Mountaineers got an up-close look at why the Miners are so highly regarded.
Negaunee won all the flights in straight sets for a 8-0 shutout.
“We knew we had our work cut out for us heading into a matchup with Negaunee as they’re one of the top programs in the U.P.,” IM coach Marcus Celello said. “Overall, I believe we played well considering the level of competition. Matches like this are a great way to push us as we prepare for the postseason.”
The closest match came at No. 1 doubles, where Joey Colavecchi and Bradon Farragh took four games off of Jace Turri and James Thomson after the Negaunee pair won the opening set 6-0.
Additionally, Jack Smith and Tyler Winch won a game in each set against Gavin Downey and Gavin Jacobson at No. 2 doubles.
In the other two doubles matches, Brady Johnson and Zack Brundage upended Benjamin Truong and Carter Kassin 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 flight, while Brandon Borlace and Ethan Harris defeated Lucas Kassin and Andrew Larsen 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 flight.
In the singles matches, Negaunee’s Luke Syrjala defeated Reece Kangas 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Gavin Saunders beat Evan Copley 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Mick Kumpula knocked off Colin Schneider 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Tyler Lajimodiere shutout Geno Schinderle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
