In Brief: Knights split with Broncos
NORWAY — Norway dropped a 6-3 decision in the opening game of a doubleheader with Bark River-Harris on Tuesday but rebounded for a 16-1 four-inning victory in Skyline Central Conference play at Marion Park.
In the opener, the Broncos scored three runs in the top of the first, but the Knights answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. However, BR-H added single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to come away with the win.
Norway logged six singles in the game, led by two each from Donna VanHolla and Andi Carlson. Elizabeth Romitti recorded a single and a run scored, Kara Stanchina added a single and a run scored and VanHolla scored the other run.
Hannah Burklund went the distance in the circle for the Knights. She surrendered eight hits, five earned runs and five walks while striking out nine.
In the finale, Norway scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first and cruised from there. VanHolla powered the Knights to the victory with four hits, including two doubles, and six RBIs. Carlson added three hits and three runs driven in, Romitti chipped in with three hits, four runs scored and an RBI, Jada Freudinger posted a triple and two RBIs, Stanchina supplied two hits and a run driven in, Anna Falk put up a double and an RBI and Olivia Kraemer also drove home a run.
Stanchina got the win, pitching all four innings with three hits and one earned run allowed, walking four and fanning one.
IM GOLFERS TOP LOCAL RIVALS
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain boys varsity golf team topped four of their local rivals at Pine Grove Country Club on Monday.
The Mountaineers tallied a team score of 172, beating out Kingsford (192), Norway (196), North Dickinson (233) and West Iron County (242).
Iron Mountain’s Brett Ramme and Norway’s Carson Chartier were co-medalists, as both shot a 38 over the nine-hole match.
Besides Ramme, the Mountaineers got solid performances from Cooper Pigeon (44), Sam Yake (44) and Austin LaFave (46) to beat out their local rivals Monday.
Other top scorers included Kingsford’s Lance Hill (42) and Nick Doran (43), and Norway’s Evan Moyer (42). Brady Jungwirth led North Dickinson with a 50, while DJ Kemperman posted the best score for the Wykons with a 51.
YOUTH FOOTBALL REGISTRATIONS DUE
IRON MOUNTAIN — Registration for the upcoming season for the Central U.P. Youth Football League is open.
All current fourth- to seventh-grade students may register to play in any of the following areas: Bark River, Escanaba (4th and 5th grades only), Iron County (4th and 5th grades only), Iron Mountain, Kingsford, North Central area and Norway.
