Norway outslugs Forest Park in softball sweep
NORWAY — The Norway varsity softball team again put on an offensive display in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Forest Park on Tuesday.
The host Knights pounded the Lady Trojans 15-0 in the opener and completed the sweep with a 18-8 win in Game 2.
Norway’s Hannah Burklund shut down and shut out Forest Park in Game 1, allowing just one hit by Dalaney Wagner. Burklund fanned eight and walked one over four innings for the win.
And, the senior starter got plenty of support. Andi Carlson (3-3, BB, 3 Rs) drove in a team-high five runs, with Donna Van Holla (2-3, 2 Rs) also tallying a pair of RBIs for the Knights.
Burklund also started on the mound in Game 2, pitching just one inning and striking out two while allowing two runs — one earned — on two hits and a walk.
Kara Stanchina came in and held the Lady Trojans in check over the final four innings, fanning six and walking one, though Forest Park did manage six runs — only two earned — on five hits.
Stanchina also led Norway at the plate, going 3-for-3 in the Game 2 win, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Knights leadoff hitter Elizabeth Romitti (0-2, RBI) walked three times and scored three runs.
Wagner tossed four innings for Forest Park, striking out six.
Wagner and Kaidince Woollard both were 2-for-3 for the Lady Trojans, with Woollard scoring twice and Wagner knocking in two runs.
“I’m happy to see us scoring runs against a strong team like Norway,” said Forest Park coach Kimberly Pekarek. “If we can clean up our defense and start connecting more at the plate, I’m hopeful that we can come ready to compete in districts in Ishpeming on June 2.”
