In Brief: New law allows alcohol sales at college sporting events
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A new state law allows alcoholic drinks to be sold at college sporting events in Michigan.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Tuesday allowing liquor licenses to be issued to sporting venues at public universities, including Michigan State in East Lansing and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
“Authorizing the legal sale of alcohol at sporting events will bring us on equal footing with other universities, help reduce the likelihood of binge drinking before games, and bring in a heck of a lot more revenue that we can use to improve the student experience,” Whitmer said in a statement.
Whitmer also signed legislation making liquor-to-go permanent, which is expected to generate revenue for restaurants and small businesses.
NBA AGAIN TO PLAY IN FRANCE
NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA’s French connection continues to grow.
The league announced Wednesday that the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers will play in Paris on Jan. 11, the third regular-season game held at Accor Arena. In January, the Chicago Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons in Paris, which is hosting the 2024 Olympics.
The Nets-Cavs matchup comes on the heels of French teenager Victor Wembanyama being selected with the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft by the San Antonio Spurs.
This will be the Nets’ second game in Paris after playing a preseason game in the French capital in 2008. The Cavaliers have never played in Europe. Cleveland won the Summer League title in Las Vegas earlier this week.
TORKELSON HITS 2 HRS IN DEFEAT
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dairon Blanco tripled, doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame Spencer Torkelson’s two-homer night to outscore the Detroit Tigers 11-10 on Tuesday.
Blanco tripled and scored to help the Royals tie it at 2 in the third, and had a run-scoring bunt hit to cap a five-run fourth. He doubled and scored in both the sixth and eighth innings for his first career four-hit game.
Seven consecutive Royals reached safely in the fourth en route to a 7-2 lead. Freddy Fermin and Drew Waters had RBI extra-base hits and Edward Olivares slapped a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.
In the first inning, Torkelson blasted Daniel Lynch’s sinker 430 feet to left for his first homer since July 2 and a 2-0 lead. He had a three-run shot — his 14th of the season — to left in the fifth to cut it to 7-5.
Torkelson added a seventh-inning double. He had career highs with five RBIs and 10 total bases.
Detroit scored four in the ninth as Scott Barlow walked three but escaped by retiring Riley Greene on a fly ball with two Tigers on base.
Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (0-1) made his third start of the season after missing almost a year after surgery on his left elbow. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, striking out three over four innings.
Javier Baez doubled and scored in the sixth for the Tigers. Baez had three hits and stole two bases.
