KINGSFORD — After facing off over the weekend, the Iron Mountain and Kingsford girls varsity tennis teams were set to meet again Monday. Instead, Mother Nature intervened with the matchup between the rivals being canceled due to rain.

The competition on Saturday, however, was in full effect as West Iron County, Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Escanaba clashed on the courts at Kingsford High School for the Kingsford Invite.

The format of this year’s contest was changed to a round-robin style, where each team played each other, due to only four teams attending.

KINGSFORD’S DAY: It was an up-and-down day for the Flivvers as they went 1-3 against West Iron County with No. 1 Ella Rizzo falling to Aubrey Bice (2-6, 1-6), Allette Shanks losing to Seanna Stine (2-6, 1-6) and Addie Rutter dropping her match against Kaitlyn Smith (2-6, 3-6). Abby Prezalkowski picked up a win for the Flivvers against Erin Kolbas (6-0, 6-3).

“(The) team’s overall performance was slow out of the gates,” Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said. “I think we could have had a few more wins against WIC. It was a long day full of highs and lows, remaining mentally strong is hard with back-to-back matches.”

In doubles, Kingsford’s No.1 pairing of Audrey Veale and Libby Vross picked up a win over Destiny Lemery and Olivia LaMay (6-0, 6-4). No. 3 pairing of Addy Kriegl and Eden Janousek also grabbed a win for the Flivvers over Alex Hansen and Madison Cronkright (6-2, 6-2). No. 4 pairing of Addison Paternoster and Madalyn Sleik outlasted Rachel Fanous and Julia White for a three-set win (6-7, 6-4, 11-9).

No. 2 pairing of Ava Lovell and Aubrey Phillips battled to a third set but lost to the Wykons’ Aubrey Richardson and Kaycee Ingram (2-6, 6-2, 7-10).

Against Iron Mountain’s singles, Kingsford finished 2-2. Rizzo lost in three to Iron Mountain’s No. 1 Avea Brown (4-6, 7-5, 2-10). Shanks lost to Mountaineers No. 2 Alysia Wood (3-6, 2-6).

Addie Rutter grabbed a win over Jacalyn Rowe (6-1, 6-0) and Prezalkowski beat Ani Lucas (6-4, 6-0).

“I think that I played very well during my matches on Saturday, but mainly during my second match and my last one,” Addie Rutter said. “I had some awesome shots during my match with Esky. It was also nice because the girl I was playing with, Sam Korpi, was super sweet and fun to play.”

The Flivvers finished doubles competition against Iron Mountain at 4-0. Veale and Vross won over No.1 pairing Hailey Greenleaf and Maddie Powell (6-1, 6-2), Lovell and Phillips beat Betsy Vanegas and Veronica Stanchina (6-3, 6-2), Kriegl and Janousek outlasted Lillian Olson and Emelia Miles (6-0, 6-0). The Mountaineers forfeited the No. 4 doubles match.

Kingsford’s roughest matches of the day were against Escanaba, finishing 0-4 in singles competition and 1-3 in doubles.

WYKONS’ PERFORMANCE: West Iron County rolled by Iron Mountain going 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles competition.

“It was a good day for WIC, considering the long day,” Schive said. “They played some tough opponents, but with good communication, the doubles teams were able to hang in there.

In No.1 singles, Aubrey Bice beat Avea Brown (6-2, 6-0). No. 2 Seanna Stine won over Alysia Wood (6-1, 6-1).

“(Stine) did an excellent job, hustled on the court and strategized,” WIC coach Jennifer Schive said. “She is a seasoned player. I look forward to seeing what she does at the GNCs and UPs.”

Wykons’ No. 3 Kaitlyn Smith swept Jacalyn Rowe (6-0, 6-0) while Erin Kolbas beat Ani Lucas in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-7).

“Kaitlyn Smith had excellent matches against Kingsford and IM,” Schive said. “She hustles on the court and can return just about any serve. She is a competitor.”

Against the Mountaineers’ No. 1 doubles pairings, Lemery and LaMay beat Greenleaf and Powell (6-3, 6-3). Richardson and Ingram beat Vanegas and Stanchina (6-1, 6-2). Cronkright and Hanseng won against Olson and Miles. Rachel Fenous and Julie While won the No. 4 match due to forfeit.

WIC went 0-4 in singles matches and 0-4 in doubles matches against Escanaba.

Kingsford returns to action today against Iron Mountain with the action scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. The Wykons also return to play today as they head to Menominee with play set to begin at 3:45 p.m.

IRON MOUNTAIN: Despite struggling against West Iron County and Kingsford, the Mountaineers faced Escanaba looking to turn things around. However, they lost 8-0.

In No. 1 singles, Brown lost to Sopia Derkos (6-0, 6-0). Wood lost to Escanaba No. 2 Molly Van Damme (6-2, 6-2). Maracini lost to Korpi (6-1, 6-1) and Rowe fell to Martin (6-1, 6-1).

In No. 1 doubles, Greenleaf and Powell fell to Natalie Williams and Samm Manninen (6-1, 6-0). Escanaba’s No. 2 pairing of Molly Smale and Sonya Maki beat Stanchina and Vanegas (6-0, 6-2). Miles and Lucas lost to Sophie Hill and Sophie Wagner (6-1, 6-0). The Mountaineers forfeited the No. 4 doubles match.

“Kingsford, West Iron, and Escanaba are solid teams, so we went in looking to just compete and play well,” IM coach Keith Huotari said. “I have a young group of girls with very limited experience playing at the varsity level, but I’m seeing definite signs of improvement across the board.”
