Huskies win 13th consecutive Miner’s Cup 62-0
MARQUETTE — The Michigan Tech football team scored early and often to secure its 13th-straight Miner’s Cup win with a 62-0 victory over rival Northern Michigan at the Superior Dome in Marquette on Saturday night.
The win marks the highest-scoring victory in the history of the rivalry, with the previous highest-scoring win coming back in 1961 when Northern Michigan won 61-6.
Michigan Tech moves back into the win column with an overall record of 3-3 and 1-2 in GLIAC play.
Northern Michigan remains winless with a ledger of 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC.
Northern struggled offensively as first year quarterback Aiden Hoard made his first career start, finishing 19-of-31 for 131 yards passing and two interceptions.
Near the end of the first half, with Tech leading 24-0, Iron Mountain’s Dante Basanese recorded his second interception of the season to give the Huskies another scoring chance. Tech quarterback Alex Fries, who rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns, led a 32-yard drive and scored on a 4-yard run to put the Huskies up 31-0 at halftime. Fries finished 15-of-21 passing with two TDs.
Also seeing action for Tech were sophomore fullback Bryce Pietrantonio of Iron Mountain, who had one catch for 11 yards, and Kingsford freshman wide receiver Nic Nora, who had one catch for 9 yards. Basanese, a sophomore, had three solo tackles and an assist.
For the Wildcats, Iron Mountain junior tight end Charlie Gerhard had three catches for 25 yards.
The Huskies held host Northern Michigan to just 85 yards of total offense.
