In Brief: Swim records set at YMCA
IRON MOUNTAIN – The record board at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool has some new additions from the youth swim team.
Over the course of the past season, Sierra Tatangelo, Elena Nelson, Sawyer Williams, Dominic Tatangelo and Tucker Williams all set new team bests in various events.
“We enjoyed a lot of success last season, and this season is off to a great start as well,” NLYMCA head coach Aimee Tatangelo said. “The kids continue to work extremely hard and show consistent improvement. I’m especially proud of this group to be able to leave their mark. It’s a terrific accomplishment for them.”
Sierra Tatangelo claimed three records in the female 8 & under bracket with the 100-yard backstroke (1:45.40), 200-yard freestyle (3:14.22), and 500-yard freestyle (8:12.11), while Nelson took the female 13-14 year old 1000-yard freestyle record (15.35.88).
On the male side, Sawyer Williams broke the 100-yard backstroke 8 & under record (1:56.69). Dominic Tatangelo set the 9-10 year old 200-yard backstroke (4:28.57) mark, and Tucker Williams claimed both the 1000-yard freestyle (14:43.32) and 1650-yard freestyle (27:40.80) in the 11-12 age category.
New swimmers are always welcome on the team, and meets are optional. Visit the YMCA Welcome Desk for more information.

SWIATEK WINS POTY HONORS
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Iga Swiatek’s second consecutive season-ending No. 1 ranking has helped her collect a second consecutive WTA Player of the Year award. She is the first player since Serena Williams to claim that honor twice in a row.
Williams, who retired last year, was the WTA Player of the Year every season from 2012-15, the final four of the seven total times the American claimed that award. Swiatek went 68-11 in 2023 with a tour-leading six titles. Other WTA awards announced Monday included Zheng Qinwen of China as the Most Improved Player of the Year, Mirra Andreeva of Russia as Newcomer of the Year and Elina Svitolina of Ukraine for the Comeback of the Year.
