8 Mountaineer wrestlers advance to regionals

MANISTIQUE — It was a successful Saturday for the Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team as it had eight wrestlers, out of 10, advance out of District 25 action in Manistique.

Alex Wilson, Brandon Truong, Tyler Winch, Di’Angelo Saldana, Danny Manier, Fulton Stroud, Bradon Walstrom and Giovanni Saldana will wrestle at Regionals on Saturday in Charlevoix.

If any one places in the top four at regionals, they will earn a spot in the MHSAA individual state finals on March 1 at Ford Field.

“We have been on a roll individually and team wise,” Mountaineers head coach Cory Mclaren said. “The team knows what’s at stake and are ready for the challenge.”

Wilson grabbed a 17-0 technical fall over Manistique’s Gradyen Holt in the semifinals. He then pinned Jedidiah Brady from St. Ignace-LaSalle to lock up first place in the 120-pound division.

Truong also wrestled at 120 for the Mountaineers and picked up a fourth place finish after grabbing two wins in the consolation bracket. He was pinned in the third-place match.

Winch brought home gold in the 126-pound division. He won 17-0 in the quarterfinals over Rogers City’s Vincent Mansfield before pinning Munising’s Andrew Cain in the semifinals. He secured a majority decision in the finals over Wyatt Hanel from Inland Lakes.

Di’Angelo Saldana also competed at 126. He won by decision in the quarters and then lost to Hanel in the semis. Saldana narrowly escaped the consolation semifinals with a 1-0 decision, however he lost in the third place match to Cain.

In 138-pound action, Manier brought home a first place finish after pinning Bark River-Harris’ Miles Halfaday in the semis and Munising’s Cody Lincoln in the finals.

At 165, Iron Mountain brought home first (Stroud) and second (Walstrom). Stroud pinned Walstrom in the first place match.

Giovanni Saldana rounded out the Mountaineers podium finishers with a third place in the 190-pound division. He pinned Newberry’s Gabe Luck to secure third.

Shayna Hruska will wrestle at the girls regionals on Sunday.
