In Brief: Simmons paces Purdue NW

Purdue Northwest, featuring former Forest Park star Mercedes Simmons, travels to the Upper Peninsula this week for a pair of women’s basketball games.

Simmons, a senior forward, is averaging 16.3 point, 8.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game for the Pride, who are 9-12 overall and 4-7 in the GLIAC.

The Pride will play at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday at Michigan Technological University in Houghton and at noon Eastern time Saturday at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

Michigan Tech (10-9,6-5) defeated Purdue Northwest 63-51 in their last matchup Jan. 20 in Hammond, Ind., despite a double-double recorded by Simmons — 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Hosting NMU (13-7, 7-4) on Jan. 18, the Pride fell 76-62 as Simmons totaled 21 points and 9 rebounds.

EMBIID SET FOR KNEE PROCEDURE

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will undergo an unspecified procedure this week to correct the injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee.

The 76ers did not say how much time Embiid was expected to miss on Sunday night.

The 76ers have a three-game homestand this week that opens Monday against Dallas.

Embiid hurt his left knee Tuesday night in a loss to the Golden State Warriors.

He underwent an MRI that revealed the injury.

MAHOMES’ FATHER ARRESTED ON DWI

TYLER, Texas (AP) — The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been arrested on at least his third charge of driving while intoxicated, according to Smith County, Texas, records.

Patrick Mahomes Sr.’s bond was set at $10,000 and he was released Sunday, according to the records.

Mahomes’ arrest occurred just more than a week before his son leads his team into the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49er.

The teams meet next Sunday in Las Vegas.
