Flivvers softball struggles against Calumet

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford varsity softball team welcomed Calumet to Lodal Park on Tuesday for a West PAC doubleheader.

The Flivvers’ bats struggled to get going and the Copper Queens picked up a 15-3 win in the first game and a 17-7 victory to close the day.

Kingsford is 2-9 on the year.

Game One

Calumet jumped out in front of Kingsford with a two-run top of the first. But the Flivvers fought back, adding a run in the next half inning to make it a 2-1 game.

However, the Copper Queens notched six runs in the second and pulled away.

Kingsford would add two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Calumet locked up the win.

Ady Weber got the start for the Flivvers. She pitched five innings and struck out four.

Offensively, McKenna Trulock, Jenna Viau and Finnley Lutz each recorded an RBI for Kingsford. Anna Bortolini and Lutz both had a double in the game. Kailey Sundquist recorded the Flivvers lone stolen base.

Game Two

Kingsford found its flow on offense in the second game, tallying seven runs. However, Calumet held on for the 17-7 win.

The Cooper Queens recorded 20 hits in the contest compared to eight for the Flivvers. Kingsford recorded five errors in the loss.

Viau got the start for the Flivvers. She pitched 5.1 innings and struck out six.

Weber led the Kingsford offense with three RBIs. Maddie Jungles was close behind with two RBIs. Sundquist and Addy Kriegl each recorded one RBI.

Kriegl, Weber and Sundquist each recorded a home run.

Kingsford is back in action today against Marquette at Lodal Park.

BOBCATS 18, HORNETS 0

ELCHO, Wis. — The Florence varsity softball team started Northern Lakes Conference play off on the right foot Tuesday as it toppled Elcho, 18-0 in Elcho, Wis.

“Our pitching is looking very good and continues to get better,” Bobcats head coach Dan Robinson said. “We did a great job of putting the ball on the bat as a unit.

“We need to stay focused at the plate with the upcoming games, hitting with power.”

Florence is now 3-4 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

Allison Wood got the start for the Bobcats. She pitched two hitless innings and struck out four.

Sami Demuri also took the bump for Florence.

She pitched two innings and struck out two.

The Bobcats received offensive contributions from Isabella Millan (2 for 4, 2 singles), Demuri (2 for 4, 2 doubles), Lieghton Lamberg (3 for 4, 2 doubles) and Aurora McCarthy (2 for 4, 1 homerun).

Florence is home today at 5 p.m. against Three Lakes/Phelps.

KNIGHTS 9, NORDICS 5

NORWAY — The Norway varsity softball team kept its momentum going in the Skyline Central Conference as it toppled North Dickinson in both games of a doubleheader at Marion Park on Tuesday.

The Knights are now 8-5 on the season and 4-0 in SCC contests.

Game One

North Dickinson took control with a two-run showing in the top of the first inning. The Nordics added another run in the third making it a 3-0 North Dickinson lead.

However, the Knights responded in the bottom of the frame with five runs as they grabbed their first lead of the night, 5-3.

Norway silenced the Nordics bats in the fourth and then added two more to its tally when they came to the plate.

The Knights held a 7-3 advantage heading into the fifth.

North Dickinson added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was too late as Norway took home the 9-5 win.

Jordyn Moln got the start for the Knights. She pitched 2.2 innings and struck out four. Kara Stanchina closed the game for Norway, pitching 4.1 innings and fanning seven.

Elizabeth Romitti led the Knights at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Moln tallied three RBIs while Payton Paquette added two RBIs. Emma Dube drew two walks. Moln, Dube and Paquette each had two hits.

Janessa Chartier started the game for the Nordics. She pitched 3.2 innings and struck out three.

Offensively, Lauren Jungwirth and Kiira Ledzian each recorded an RBI for North Dickinson.

It also received contributions from Aly Steinbrecher (1 walk), Aspen Anderson (1 hit, 1 stolen base), Jungwirth (1 hit, 1 stolen base), Dalaney Steinbrecher (1 hit, 2 stolen bases), Ella Rossi (2 walks) and Mary Grace Holmes (2 walks).

Game Two

It was more of the same in game two as the Knights took an early lead and held on for a 9-4 win.

Stanchina got the win for Norway. She pitched all seven innings and struck out eight.

Ava Oman started the game for North Dickinson. She pitched six innings and struck out one.

Romitti finished the day 3 for 4 at the plate and two stolen bases while Stanchina went 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Moln and Paquette each added two RBIs.

Oman, Alle Brown and Madi Carpenter each tallied an RBI for the Nordics. Aly Steinbrecher, Dalaney Steinbrecher, Brown and Holmes all drew one walk.

The Knights are back at Marion Park today against Hancock while North Dickinson is back in action at home against Superior Central at 4 p.m.
