IM baseball drops two to Bulldogs

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain varsity baseball team’s losing streak is now up to three games after it dropped both games in a doubleheader to Hancock on Friday at Ranger Field.

The Mountaineers hung tough in the opener and lost 3-0. However, the Bulldogs found their footing in the second game, picking up a 14-2 victory.

Game One

Niko Burgoon took the mound for Iron Mountain and he went right to work against Hancock, fanning two of the first three batters he faced. However, the Mountaineers’ offense faced the same fate in the bottom half of the inning.

In the second inning, a Mountaineers’ error and a Hancock single made it a 1-0 game.

The Bulldogs plated another run off an error in the third and increased their lead to 2-0.

A single in the sixth scored Hancock’s third run of the game and it would hold on for the 3-0 win.

Burgoon pitched six innings for the Mountaineers. He struck out eight batters and allowed one earned run.

Evan Mendini and Connor Pickett each recorded a hit for Iron Mountain. Gerald Sampoll-Torres was hit by a pitch.

Game Two

Both teams scored a run in the opening inning and the Mountaineers took their first lead of the game, 2-1, in the second inning off of a Mendini single.

But, the home team’s lead wouldn’t last long as the Bulldogs rattled off six runs in the third and held a 7-2 lead.

Hancock scored three in the fourth and four in the fifth to pick up the 14-2 five-inning victory.

Ian Marttila got the start for Iron Mountain. He pitched 2.2 innings and walked two. Charlie Anderson and Jake Powell also pitched for the Mountaineers. Anderson went an inning and walked four while Powell pitched for 1.1 innings and struck out one.

Burgoon and Mendini each recorded an RBI. Powell led the way with two hits while Burgoon, Mendini and Jace Peterson each had one.

Max White tallied a walk.

Iron Mountain is back home on Wednesday against Norway at 3:30 p.m.

KNIGHTS 10, RED DEVILS 0

NORWAY — The Norway varsity baseball team’s strong performances on the mound continued on Friday as senior Alex Ortman pitched a no hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader at Mike Maule Field against Ironwood.

The Knights picked up a 10-0 win in the opener and a 17-7 victory in the finale.

Norway is now 9-2-1 on the season.

Game One

Ortman pitched all four innings in Norway’s 10-0 win to start the day. He struck out 11 batters and walked two.

The Knights’ offense was raring to go as well and they scored five runs in the opening frame. Landon Amundson and Cole Baij each recorded an RBI in the frame.

Norway scored again in the third on a single from Owen Baij that scored Carter Cazzola and it took a 6-0 lead.

The Knights tacked on four more in the fourth as Maddex Burklund and Cameron Varda tallied RBIs.

Varda had two RBIs and two walks for Norway. Cole Baij and Cazzola also recorded two walks apiece. Owen Baij, Landon Amundson, Cole Baij, Bryce Adams, Burklund and AJ Gallino all had one RBI apiece. Ortman, Gallino, Cole Baij, Cazzola, Varda, Amundson, Burklund and Owen Baij each stole one base.

Game Two

A sacrifice fly from Ortman brought the Knights’ second run of the first inning in as they looked to be picking up where they left off.

However, the Red Devils found their footing in the second, scoring five runs off a homerun and Norway error to take a 5-2 lead.

Hayden Amundson scored on an errant throw in the second and the Knights trailed 5-3.

Ironwood tacked on two runs in the third, on a Norway error. But, the Knights responded with a run of their own in the frame and then added 11 to their total in the fourth. It was over from there and Norway rolled to the 17-7 win.

Bryce Adams started the game for the Knights. He struck out four in two innings of work. Cole Baij picked up the win in relief. He pitched for three innings and fanned five.

Owen Baij led the Knights at the plate going 5 for 5 and driving in four RBIs. He also stole two bases. Varda, Landon Amundson and Cole Baij each recorded two RBIs.

Norway is back home today at 4:30 p.m. against Negaunee.

WILDCATS 4, BADGERS 3

NIAGARA, Wis. — Despite trailing by four runs in the fifth inning, the Niagara varsity baseball team nearly mounted a comeback against Lena on Friday in Niagara, Wis.

However, the Badgers fell short and the Wildcats secured a 4-3 victory.

Niagara is now 6-5 overall.

Christian Hedmark started the game on the mound for the Badgers. He pitched seven innings, striking out 11 and walking one.

After three innings, both teams were locked into a 0-0 tie. However, it was Lena that found its footing first and the Wildcats scored three runs in the fourth inning. They added another in the fifth and held a 4-0 lead.

Niagara responded in the sixth. Connor Bath started things off with a walk, bringing Hedmark to the dish. He singled on a shot to center field and Bath scored. Blake Holmes reached on an error and then a Mason Richtig double drove in two runs. The Badgers trailed 4-3.

Despite their best efforts, that’s where the score would remain when the final out was recorded.

Richtig led Niagara with two RBIs. Hedmark recorded one RBI. Bath tallied a walk.

The Badgers are headed to Gillett today for a 4 p.m. contest against Gillett-Suring. On Tuesday, they are back in Niagara, Wis. against Kingsford at 4 p.m.

CARDINALS 10,BOBCATS 0

CRANDON, Wis. — Crandon is the No. 1 team in the Marinette & Oconto Conference after a few weeks of play. On Friday, the Florence varsity baseball team found out why as it made the trip to Crandon, Wis.

The Cardinals picked up the 10-0 win to remain undefeated in conference play.

The Bobcats are now 2-1 in the conference and 6-1 overall.

After two innings, Crandon held a 3-0 lead.

Florence continued to battle, but it couldn’t break through and the Cardinals kept pouring it on. They added one to their total in the fourth and then tallied six in the fifth to pick up the win.

Bradley Steber got the start on the mound for the Bobcats. He pitched 4.1 innings and struck out one.

Steber, Trent McLain and Matthew Smith each notched one hit for Florence.

They were all 1 for 2 at the dish.

The Bobcats are back at home today as they face Goodman/Pembine at 5 p.m.
