Kingsford baseball overwhelms Gremlins

KINGSFORD — Kingsford pounded out 26 hits and dumped Houghton 10-0 and 12-2 in a pair of non-conference varsity baseball games on a chilly, raw and occasionally snowy afternoon Friday at Lodal Park.

“It was nice to bounce back,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “We were feeling a little down about what happened against Negaunee, so it was nice to come out and hit the ball.”

The Flivvers (2-2, 0-1) jumped all over the Gremlins in the opener, scoring five times in the first inning. They added two more in the second and third innings before walking off with the run-rule victory in the fourth. All 12 hits by the Flivvers were singles.

Junior Joey Weber had a three-hit performance with two RBIs. Junior Garrett Brown had two singles and a pair of stolen bases. Freshman Jonah Doenier recorded two hits. Junior Gavin Trevillian notched a hit and two RBIs, and junior Andres Finley poked a single and collected an RBI. Junior Nolan Hendrickson, sophomore Jack Kriegl and senior Wyatt Scott also added hits.

Trevillian and junior Gavin Grondin kept the Houghton bats quiet. Trevillian allowed one hit, no walks and struck out four in two innings. Grondin allowed a hit and two walks while striking out one.

Kingsford pitching dominated in the second game as well. Freshman Jack Spreen fanned nine Gremlins, while allowing four hits and a walk. Freshman Noah Trulock pitched the fifth and final inning, allowing one hit and one walk while whiffing one. Spreen and Trulock each allowed one run.

“As cold as it was, they seemed to have really good control,” Kriegl said. “They were hitting spots and throwing hard. We have a lot of games coming up and we’re going to have to rely on multiple pitchers, so it’s important we get guys out there and get them comfortable. When you have kids throwing the way they did tonight, all four of those guys, that bodes well for us in the future.”

After falling behind 1-0 in the second game, The Flivvers rallied right back with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Three more runs scored in the third and four in the fourth before Kingsford walked it off with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth.

The mercy-rule run scored when freshman Caleb Erickson rolled a grounder to short that took a wild hop on the shortstop allowing freshman Devin Miller to score from third.

The Flivvers tagged Houghton pitching for 14 hits in the game. Sophomore Jacob Deuter belted three hits, including two doubles over the left fielder’s head. He reached a fourth time on an error in the fifth and scored four runs. Miller also produced a three-hit game, and scored three times. Freshmen Bradley Bottesi, Erickson and Trulock each contributed two hits, and Spreen and freshman Jake Lockhart hit singles.

“Hats off to Houghton,” Kriegl said. “This weather stinks, but they came down and they battled. They’re a young team, so obviously they’re going to get a lot better and we’re looking forward to playing them up there.”

Kingsford continues non-conference play today with a pair at Antigo, Wis.
