KINGSFORD — The Marquette varsity soccer team wasn’t Kingsford’s only opponent on Tuesday as both teams had to battle a biting wind throughout the entire 80 minutes of competition.

It was the Sentinels day as they braved the elements and picked up a 3-1 win at Commemorative Field.

“I thought, overall, they played well,” Flivvers head coach Jenette Gunville said, “it was just super cold. Everyone was cold and we had some injuries early on. … We’ve got some things to work on. But we did good for as cold as it was.”

Not only did the cold make it hard for players to get motivated, it provides a unique challenge once a player leaves the pitch.

“Yes, it is hard,” Gunville said. “And then once you sit down and go back on the field, you’ve got to warm back up. It’s cold.”

Despite the cold, senior goalie Alaina Kowalski made multiple plays that stood out to Gunville.

“Our goalie rocked it,” Gunville added. “She did really well.”

Marquette struck first early in the opening half as Anabel Ollila buried a deep shot, putting the Sentinels ahead 1-0.

Both teams kept the pressure on, but the Marquette lead would grow to 2-0 with 30 minutes left in the first half after Lily Eberhard buried a shot from the penalty arc that found an opening in Kowalski’s defense.

Two minutes later, Eberhard added to the Sentinels’ total, making it a 3-0 game.

After halftime, the Flivvers offense began to find its footing and with 22 minutes remaining in the game, they broke through.

Ingrid Holt netted the goal on a chip shot that went over the Marquette goalkeepers outstretched hands. Kingsford trailed 3-1.

Despite a couple more chances to score for both teams, the game ended with Marquette ahead 3-1.

The Flivvers head to the Superior Dome on Friday for two games. Their first game will be a rematch with Marquette at 3 p.m. Kingsford will follow that with a game against Boyne City at 5 p.m.
