Mountaineers power past Gwinn tennis

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain boys tennis team opened its 2024 season Tuesday against visiting Gwinn with as dominant of a performance as a team can give.

In defeating the Modeltowners 8-0, the Mountaineers won all 72 games played with the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles matches being awarded to IM on forfeits.

At the top singles flight, Kaden Sheldon defeated Collin Olvera 6-0, 6-0, while Tyler Winch knocked off Luke Kainulainen by the same score at No. 2 singles.

Evan Copley shut out Hunter Beltz at No. 3 singles and Brayden Kassin did the same to Leland Wages at No. 4 singles.

In the two doubles matches, No. 1 Reece and Oskar Kangas won all 12 games against Dakota Aho and Logan Jandreau.

No. 2 Geno Schinderle and Dylan Lindgren rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jakob Smith and Vinnie Grossehme.

“It was nice to finally play a match after five weeks of spring practice,” IM coach Keith Huotari said. “Gwinn is down in numbers and court experience this year, and I have a nice group of players who are all very close in ability. It’s going to be exciting to see how far this team can progress leading up to the U.P. tournament. That’s our focus.”

Huotari said things look good for the IM program in the long term as well.

“I have the luxury of having a full varsity roster plus a nearly full group of players who will gain experience playing junior varsity matches, which bodes well for the program.

“To compete with the best teams, you need to develop players over time.”
