Nordics softball handles business against Rockets

FELCH — The ping of bats could be heard throughout Felch on Monday as the North Dickinson varsity softball team took on Skyline Central Conference foe Rapid River in a nonconference doubleheader at Hardwood Hall.

The Nordics started the day with a 13-3 win against the Rockets. They followed that with a 23-8 victory on their home field.

Game One

North Dickinson started the day on a roll as it tallied four runs in the opening frame and added another three in the second. The Rockets only recorded one run in that time.

In the top of the third, Rapid River strung together its best inning of the game. It recorded two runs, making it a 7-3 Nordics’ advantage. They wouldn’t score again.

North Dickinson reasserted its dominance at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. The Nordics knocked in five runs, pushing their lead to 12-3.

They added another run in the bottom of the fifth to lock up the 13-3 season-opening win.

Aly Steinbrecher, Khloe Roberts and Aspen Anderson each recorded two walks in the game.

Lauren Jungwirth led North Dickinson at the plate. She went 2 for 4 and recorded 3 RBIs. One of her hits was a triple.

Janessa Chartier picked up the win on the mound for the Nordics. She pitched four innings while allowing two hits and striking out four.

Zoey Mattson also pitched an inning in the win, recording one strike out.

Game Two

Rapid River found its rhythm on offense right away in the second game. It recorded three runs in the opening frame.

However, the Nordics’ offense picked up where it left off and tallied 12 runs in the bottom of the first. North Dickinson added nine runs to its total in the second.

Ava Oman picked up the win for the Nordics on the mound. She pitched 1.2 innings and recorded one strike out. Mattson came in in relief for the home team. She pitched 1.1 innings, walking six batters and allowing four earned runs.

Jungwirth led the way at the plate for North Dickinson. She went 3 for 4 and recorded seven RBIs. She also had a homerun. Dalaney Steinbrecher also had a strong showing in the batter’s box. She went 2 for 2 with two walks. The Nordics are back at Hardwood Hall on Friday as they take on Munising in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
