KINGSFORD — The Negaunee boys tennis team is a perennial power in the Upper Peninsula. The Miners have four of the last six Division 1 championships including last year’s victory over Escanaba.

On Wednesday, the Miners brought the latest version of their squad to Kingsford High School to take on the Flivvers and left with a 7-1 victory.

Negaunee swept the four singles matches and recorded victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles.

Isaac Lebouef and Jacob Crockford produced Kingsford’s lone win, defeating Blake Holmgren and Carson Lajimodiere 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 flight.

The Flivvers nearly earned another victory at No. 3 doubles, but Hunter Hulkkonen and Fletcher Hulkkonen fell just short, dropping a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 decision to Easton Guenette and Nolan O’Dovero.

The No. 2 singles match was also competitive as Negaunee’s Mick Kumpula posted a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over Kingsford’s Landon Adam.

The Miners dominated the other five matches. In singles, Gavin Saunders knocked off Gavin Moore 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, Tyler Lajimodiere topped Evan Grymes 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Ethan Harris shut down Gavin Strong 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth flight.

In the other two doubles matches, James Thomson and Brady Johnson topped Eli Wallis and Chris Sweig 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 flight and Kolten Stone and Quinn Waters defeated Brett Berglund and Beau Brackett 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 doubles.

The Flivvers competed against Iron Mountain at Kingsford High School on Thursday.

They will return to action on May 2, against Gladstone.
