Trojans sweep Bobcat Invite

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Forest Park track teams got their 2024 seasons off to a flying start by sweeping the co-ed Bobcat Invitational Thursday at Florence High School.

The Trojan boys brought home nine first-place finishes, scored 167 points and defeated the host Northwoods Storm (127), Norway (95), North Dickinson (61), West Iron County (16) and Carney-Nadeau (9).

Freshman Vienna Price captured two individual events and the Lady Trojans used their depth to outpoint West Iron County 126.5 to 90.5 for first overall. Northwoods Storm (86), North Dickinson (71), Carney-Nadeau (70) and Norway (64) followed.

On the boys side, Joey Mainville, Kevin Giuliani and Dietrich Rasner led the way with two individual firsts each. Mainville won the 800 and the 1,600, Giuliani topped the field in the shot put and the discus and Rasner bested the competition in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Additionally, Izaiah Tarter won the 3,200 and Vic Guiliani captured the high jump.

Meanwhile, the Trojans also won the 1,600 relay (Rasner, Vic Guiliani, Gabe Quevedo and Dax Huuki) and the 3,200 relay (Tarter, Max Mainville, Joey Mainville and William Hoffman).

“I was extremely pleased with the performance of the boys,” FP boys coach Kurt Anderson said. “Coming into the season, our numbers were down a little and seven of my 12 athletes have never competed in a varsity meet.”

Anderson said his team was ready to compete.

“My returning veterans set the tone and scored points early. The first-year kids went toe-to-toe with some great athletes from other schools and more than held their own. We’ll see some bigger schools in meets coming up so I can’t wait to see how they stack up against them.”

In the girls event, Price posted wins in the 800 and the 1,600. The Lady Trojans also recorded eight runner-up finishes and five third-place results.

“I am thrilled with the individual and team performances …,” FP girls coach Lindsey Anderson said. “Our girls team has several new faces and some really talented returners, so I was excited to get to that first meet and see times and distances.

“To walk away with so many great individual performances and a team trophy was phenomenal. I’m proud of the hard work they’ve put in so far and I’m really excited to see how that propels us through the season.”

The top individual performers on the day were a pair of seniors – William Kelley for Northwoods Storm and Danica Shamion for West Iron County.

Kelley, who also plays on the Florence baseball team, captured the 100, the 200, the long jump and contributed to the winning 800 relay team along with Dante Stachowicz, Wyatt Dunkes and Cameron Schiefelbein.

Meanwhile, Shamion posted victories in the 100, the 200, the 400 and the high jump.

In one of the most interesting races of the day, Shamion, the defending U.P. Division 2 champion in the 100, 200 and 400, edged Northwoods Storm junior Kamdan Johnson, the WIAA Division 3 state 100 hurdles champion and 200 state qualifier, by .01 second in the 200.

Johnson did pick up an individual win in the 100 hurdles.

The Storm also picked up wins from Truth Setner in the 400, Dazavian Hannah in the 100 hurdles, as well as victories from the girls 800 relay team of Sydney Swanson, Brooke Breummer, Naomi Millan and Karissa Smith and the 1,600 relay quartet of Johnson, Brynn Sullivan, Saylor Anderson and Marley Jones.

“We are very proud of how our athletes performed,” said Northwoods Storm first-year coach Amy Johnson, who is Kamdan Johnson’s mother. “The weather wasn’t ideal, but our athletes persevered.”

She also pointed to the contributions of her two leaders.

“(William) is a huge asset to our boys team,” Johnson said. “Kamdan ran some solid races … as well for our girls team.”

Norway picked up three victories during the meet. The 400 relay team of Anthony Pineda, Kaleb Lapine, Jayden Rynesh and Mason Trudeau recorded a victory for the Knight boys while Lauren Adams won the 300 hurdles and contributed to the winning 400 relay team with Elizabeth Romitti, Mary Cavagnetto and Abby Richter for the Knight girls.

“For our first track meet of the year, the kids ran hard and did pretty well overall for being a young and inexperienced team,” Norway coach Al Trudeau said. “We were very happy with some of the results, and we will continue to work hard and get some better times and the season continues.”

The North Dickinson girls won two events on the day – Mya Grunlund in the 3,200 and the 3,200 relay team of Grunlund, Aubrey Applekamp, Jessica Harwath and Raina Ledzian.
