Crandon sneaks past Bobcats

FLORENCE, Wis. — Trailing by multiple runs, the Florence varsity baseball team looked to be rallying late in the game against Crandon on Monday in Florence, Wis.

However, the Bobcats’ comeback fell short in the Northern Lakes Conference clash and the Cardinals held on for a 4-3 win.

Crandon is currently 4-0 in conference play while Florence falls to 3-2 in Northern Lakes action and 7-2 overall.

The Cardinals tallied all four of their runs in the top of the third inning and they held a 4-0 lead until the fifth.

That’s when Florence found its footing at the plate. Three straight singles loaded the bases as Trent McLain stepped into the box. He grounded out to short, but the Bobcats were able to plate one.

Logan Thompson followed McLain’s efforts with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed William Kelley to score. Florence trailed 4-2.

McLain would score on an error by the Cardinals’ catcher and the Bobcats cut the lead to 4-3.

The Bobcats wouldn’t score again and Crandon picked up the 4-3 win.

McLain started the game on the hill for Florence. He pitched five innings and struck out three. Bradley Steber closed things out. He pitched two innings and walked two.

McLain and Thompson each recorded an RBI for the Bobcats. Kelley, Thompson and Matthew Smith each tallied two walks. Kelley and McLain both recorded one stolen base.

The Bobcats are at home today at 5:30 p.m. against Elcho. They return to the field on Thursday when they head to Three Lakes, Wis. at 5 p.m.

NORWAY 9, BRONCOS 0

BARK RIVER — The winning didn’t stop for the Norway varsity baseball team on Monday as it moved its winning streak to nine games after sweeping Bark River-Harris, 9-0 and 12-1, in a Skyline Central Conference doubleheader in Bark River.

The Knights are now 13-2-1 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in conference action.

“We had a weird week last week with weather and Bark River was undefeated and putting up some big numbers offensively,” Norway head coach Tony Adams said, “so we challenged our kids and they responded well. Our pitching, defense, batting, and base running were all pretty darn good.”

Game One

Cole Baij got the start on the mound in the opener for Norway. He continued his dominant season with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Knights offense didn’t let his work go to waste and they immediately jumped in front of the Broncos in the first.

Three errors and a single gave Norway a 2-0 advantage. Bryce Adams drove in another run with a grounder to first base. Maddex Burklund plated the last run of the inning with a grounder to second and the Knights led 4-0.

“We were able to score some runs early, which always helps to play with the lead,” coach Adams said. “Owen Baij and Landon Amundson had really good games at the plate and Cole Baij was fantastic on the mound.”

In the second, Landon Amundson plated a run on a double and an Ortman ground out scored another as Norway took a 6-0 lead.

The Knights scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to lock up the win.

Landon Amundson led Norway with three RBIs. He was 2 for 4 at the plate. Alex Ortman was right behind with two RBIs. Cole Baij, Bryce Adams and Burklund all recorded one RBI. Cole Baij and Cameron Varda each stole two bases.

Game Two

After switching to the field, Cole Baij lit the Broncos up with his bat in the second game. He went 3 for 4 with five RBIs in the Knights’ 12-1 win.

“Cole Baij, Owen Baij, and Landon Amundson really led our offense in game two,” coach Adams said. “And Alex Ortman was good on the mound.”

At the end of the second inning, Norway held a 5-0 lead. It added two more in the fourth and five in the fifth.

The Broncos scored their lone run in the fourth inning.

Owen Baij and Landon Amundson each recorded two RBIs while Ortman and Hayden Amundson each notched one RBI. Owen Baij was 3 for 3 at the plate. Varda, Owen Baij and Landon Amundson each drew one walk and had one stolen base. Ortman picked up the win on the mound for the Knights. He struck out 11 batters in five innings.

Norway is back at Mike Maule Field today for a matchup with Jeffers.

WOLVERINES 11, BADGERS 1

CRIVITZ, Wis. — The Niagara varsity baseball team lost a step in the Marinette & Oconto Conference race on Monday as it lost 11-1 to Crivitz in Crivitz, Wis.

The Wolverines are currently second in the conference at 8-3 while the Badgers are in third with a 6-4 conference record. Niagara is currently 7-6 on the season.

Crivitz scored in every inning except the third. The Wolverines notched two in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth, three in the fifth to take a 8-0 lead.

Niagara found its footing in the top of the sixth. Easton Holmes drove in the Badgers’ lone run with a two-out single to right field that plated Blake Holmes. They trailed 8-1. The Wolverines scored three runs in the sixth to secure the win.

Christian Hedmark got the start for Niagara. He pitched four innings and struck out two. Easton Holmes also recorded two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Easton Holmes led the way with an RBI and a walk. He was 1 for 2 at the dish. Cody Bath had two walks while Mason Richtig and Blake Holmes each had one. Hedmark recorded Niagara’s only other hit.

Niagara returns to the diamond on May 20 with a trip to Felch Township for a matchup with North Dickinson at 4 p.m.
