Flivvers split weekend trip to Escanaba

ESCANABA — It was an up-and-down day for the Kingsford varsity softball team on Saturday as it took its talents to Escanaba for three games.

The Flivvers started the day with a 16-3 loss to Millington. They then lost to Negaunee 10-3 before beating Bark River-Harris 9-1 in the final game of the day.

Game One

The Cardinals jumped ahead of Kingsford early in the first inning and never looked back in their 16-3 win.

Millington tallied 10 runs in the opening frame and then poured on five runs in the second to take a 15-0 lead over the Flivvers.

However, Kingsford wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Eden Janousek started things off in the bottom of the third with a double to center field. Addy Weber followed that with a sacrifice bunt that moved Janousek to third and then Anna Bortolini brought her home with a double. Bortolini would score on a Millington error and the Flivvers trailed 15-2.

Both teams would add a run in the fourth as the Cardinals held on for the win.

Jenna Viau started the game for Kingsford on the mound. She pitched .1 innings. Reagan Cram, Weber, Maya Brunswick and Karly Trevillian all took the mound as well for the Flivvers.

Offensively, Bortolini and Carly Smith each tallied an RBI. Maddie Jungles, Kailey Sundquist and Addy Kriegl all drew a walk. Sundquist recorded the Flivvers’ only stolen base.

Game Two

Kingsford was first to the plate against Negaunee and it immediately got its offense on track.

Bortolini kicked things off with a single. Sundquist brought her home with a double to left field. Sundquist scored off a Miners’ error and the Flivvers held a 2-0 lead.

However, four straight free-passes to start the bottom of the first scored Negaunee’s first run. The Miners followed that with a double and suddenly, they were ahead 3-2. When the inning ended, the lead had ballooned to 6-2.

Bortolini drove in a run in the top of the second, cutting the Negaunee lead to three. However, Kingsford wouldn’t score again.

Negaunee tacked on four more runs and picked up the 10-3 victory.

Brunswick led the Kingsford pitching staff with five strikeouts in two innings of work.

Bortolinin and Sundquist each notched an RBI and a stolen base. Sundquist also drew two walks.

Game Three

The Flivvers started the bottom of the first inning with four straight singles as they took a 2-0 lead over the Broncos. They added two more runs and held a 4-0 lead going into the second.

Bortolini would push the lead to 5-0 with a double in the bottom of the second. But Kingsford couldn’t get anything else going in the frame.

Another Bortolini double, this time in the fourth inning, increased the Flivvers’ lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, McKenna Trulock drove in two runs on a single with Smith followed with a sac fly and Kingsford was ahead 9-0.

The Broncos scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a fielder’s choice, cutting the lead to 9-1.

However, the Flivvers would hold on and pick up the win.

Brunswick picked up the win on the bump for Kingsford. She pitched seven innings and struck out 14 batters. She was also 4 for 4 at the plate.

Trulock led the way with three RBIs while Bortolini tallied two. Smith, Kriegl and Janousek each recorded one RBI. Smith, Weber and Cram each drew one walk. Bortolini recorded Kingsford’s lone stolen base.

The Flivvers are in Gladstone today for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. EST.

ESKYMOS JV 3, KNIGHTS 2

ESCANABA — It was slow going for the Norway varsity softball team’s offense on Friday as it took its talents to Escanaba for a doubleheader with the Eskymos junior varsity team.

Escanaba swept the Knights on the day with a 3-2 win in the opener and a 17-8 victory to close out the day.

Norway is now 10-9 on the season.

Game One

The Eskymos struck first with an RBI single in the bottom of the first and they held a 1-0 lead.

Escanaba used an RBI single and Norway error in the bottom of the third to plate two more. It held a 3-0 lead over the Knights.

Then in the top of the sixth inning, the Norway bats began to come to life. Elizabeth Romitti started things off with a single. Then Kara Stanchina was plunked with a pitch. The Knights picked up their second out and Victoria Cooper strolled into the batter’s box. She connected with a pitch and sent it to center field, scoring Romitti and Stanchina as she pulled into second.

Norway now trailed 3-2. Unfortunately, the rally would fall short and Escanaba took the first game.

Jordyn Moln started the game for Norway. She pitched six innings and struck out six.

Cooper led the Knights with two RBIs. Cooper and Romitti each notched one hit. Stanchina led Norway with two stolen bases while Romitti tallied one.

Game Two

Norway kept its offensive momentum going in the second game. Romitti led the inning off with a walk and two batters later she crossed the plate to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.

The Eskymos scored two runs in the third to take the lead and then added three more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Norway responded in the fifth. Myah Gilroy drew a walk to start the frame. She scored off an Eskymos’ error. Then three batters later, Moln drove in another run on a single. Cooper followed that with a two-RBI single and the game was tied at 5. When the dust settled on the inning, Norway was ahead 7-5.

Escanaba scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth and took back the lead, 13-7.

Romitti scored on an error in the sixth, cutting the lead to 13-8, however, Norway wouldn’t score again.

The Eskymos scored four runs in the sixth and locked up the 17-8 win.

Stanchina started the game for the Knights. She struck out five in 5.1 innings.

Offensively, Moln and Cooper each recorded two RBIs. Cooper also led Norway in walks with two. Payton Paquette and Olivia Kraemer each tallied one RBI. Cooper recorded the Knights only stolen base.

Norway is in Bark River today for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. EST.
