FELCH TOWNSHIP — Led by a sweep of the field events, the Forest Park Trojan boys captured the North Dickinson Booster Club Invite on Tuesday.

Freshman Vic Guiliani stood front and center for the Trojans with victories in the high jump, the long jump and as part of the victorious 1,600 relay quartet with Dietrich Rasner, William Hoffman and Dax Huuki.

Senior Kevin Giuliani triumphed in the discus and the shot put while junior Gabe Quevedo won the pole vault to complete the sweep for the Trojan field athletes.

In the boys team competition, Forest Park totaled 138 points to hold off Bark River-Harris which ended up with 129. Northwoods Storm took third with 78.5 points, Norway finished fourth with 39, Republic-Michigamme wound up fifth with 37, North Central placed sixth with 32, Stephenson finished seventh with 31, the host Nordics took eighth with 23.5 and Hannahville Nah Tah Wahsh finished ninth with 7 points.

Aside from the Guiliani brothers, the other local male competitor to win multiple individual events was Northwoods Storm’s Truth Setner who posted victories in the 200 and 400.

Setner captured those events in convincing style, winning the 200 by .7 of a second and the 400 by 1.33 seconds. The sophomore said he tried a different approach in the 400 on Tuesday and ended with a personal record time of 56.62 seconds.

“I tried a new technique today, like going faster through my (first) 200 and I feel like that worked for me,” he said. “Before I was just going faster through my first 100 and then (alternating speeds) on the back curve before accelerating the last 200.”

Setner also teamed with Dazavian Hannah, Wyatt Dunkes and Owen Dunkes to take second in the 1,600 relay behind Forest Park.

The other local male competitor to win an individual event was Forest Park’s Izaiah Tarter, who outdueled Wes Knauf of Bark River-Harris to win the 3,200 by two seconds.

Tarter led for most of the way until Knauf edged past him late.

But the freshman fought back and looked like the stronger runner down the stretch.

“I never had to run against someone like that in middle school, but now I’m in high school and racing older kids,” Tarter said. “The difference mainly just mental stuff.”

Like figuring a way through the ebb and flow of a race.

“He kind of started to speed up where the 300 hurdles (start on the last lap). I didn’t want him to get ahead of me, but he ended up passing me, so I just stayed calm because we had like 50 more meters and (my teammates) started cheering me and that gave me a little juice.

“So I started to speed up and got ahead of him and he wasn’t speeding up anymore.”

For the other local teams, Norway was led by its 800-relay team of Maddex Burklund, Sean Dowrick, Kaleb Lapine and Anthony Pineda, which took second in their event. The Knights’ highest individual finisher was Mason Trudeau in the 200.

North Dickinson scored a pair of thirds – Ricky Haney in the shot put and Miles Lindholm in the 110 hurdles. North Central shot-put entrants Spencer Willa and Maxwell Nason led the Jets with a second- and a third-place finish in that event.

In the girls competition, the Bark River-Harris Broncos dominated the sprint events en route to winning the team title with 158.3 points. Stephenson was next up with 102, followed by the Nordics with 66, Carney-Nadeau with 58, Northwoods Storm with 53.3, Forest Park with 52, Norway with 25, Republic-Michigamme with 6 and North Central with 1.3.

The Broncos were led by senior Mckenzie Hoffmeyer who recorded wins in the 100, the 200 and as part of the victorious 800 relay squad along with Julia Nault, Julia Olson and Marissa Ives. Additionally, the Broncos won the 400 relay and the 1,600 relay and Olson topped the field in the 400.

Northwoods Storm junior Kamdan Johnson was the top local individual performer with wins in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Johnson, the defending WIAA Division 3 state champion in the 100 hurdles, continued to shine in that event, winning the race by more than two seconds for her best time so far this season.

Johnson also won the 300 hurdles by .68 seconds over Forest Park’s Ava Fischer. Johnson said she decided to try the low hurdles this season so far instead of competing in the 400 meters (the races run back-to-back so a runner has to choose one or the other.)

To this point, Johnson is winning her 300 races, but admits that her adaptation to that event is ongoing.

“I feel like me and the 300 still have some bones to pick,” said Johnson, who was a state qualifier in the 400 last spring. “I’m trying to figure out where I’m at with them. The 400 went pretty well for me last year, but this year I figured I would try the 300s and see where I’m at.

“It’s definitely not the race I thought it would be. I thought I’d be able to run through the hurdles, like it can’t be that hard, right? But it’s a huge mental game. I tend to stutter a lot and that gets rid of my forward momentum.”

Johnson said she hasn’t decided whether she will stay with the 300s or go back to the 400 meters yet.

The host Nordics claimed two individual firsts with Aubrey Applekamp capturing the high jump and Mya Grunlund posting a victory in the 3,200. Fischer led the Lady Trojans with seconds in the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as finishing third in the pole vault.

Norway sophomore Lauren Adams recorded a runner-up finish in the 400 to lead the Knights.
