IM, Kingsford, Norway remain alive in District 10 tourney

QUINNESEC — The Michigan District 10 Major Little League All-Star tournament kicked off on Friday in Quinnesec with Iron Mountain, Norway and Kingsford all fielding 12U teams.

Iron Mountain opened with a loss to Gladstone on Friday but it remains alive in the bracket after beating Schaffer 15-10 on Sunday afternoon.

Kingsford opened its slate on Friday against Escanaba.

It rolled to an 18-3 victory, setting up a match with Schaffer on Saturday. Kingsford took care of business, securing a 14-0 victory to advance.

Norway opened things up on Saturday against Gladstone.

Norway managed to fend off Gladstone and it picked up a 2-1 victory.

Norway faces Kingsford at 5:30 p.m. in Quinnesec today while Iron Mountain is back in action at 3:30 p.m.

Iron Mountain Opener

Iron Mountain opened things up against Gladstone on Friday.

Neither team would score through three innings. But in the top of the fourth, Gladstone made its move, taking a 1-0 lead on a single.

Gladstone tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning and took a 3-0 lead.

Iron Mountain responded in the bottom of the sixth when James Powell singled, scoring Troy Copiskey. It trailed 3-1.

Daniel Doers started the game on the mound for Iron Mountain. He struck out five in five innings. Tanner Helminen also took the mound. He fanned two in one inning of work.

Offensively, Powell led Iron Mountain with one RBI and two hits. Helminen and Jeb Holsworth each recorded one hit. Copiskey led the team in walks with two. Nevin Porter, Martin Husing and Helminen drew one walk apiece.

Second Game

Facing elimination, the Iron Mountain bats came to life early against Schafer.

Doers kicked things off with a two-RBI single in the first inning to give Iron Mountain the lead. Two batters later, Copiskey drove in two more on a one-out single to right field. Jake Tregillis and Hunter Grenier also scored in the frame and Iron Mountain took a 6-0 lead.

Schaffer responded in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs. But in the next half inning Iron Mountain added to its lead when Doers hit a two-run inside-the-park home run.

Then in the fourth, Nevin Porier singled to make it a 9-2 Iron Mountain advantage.

Schaffer would score eight runs between the fourth and fifth innings. However, Iron Mountain added six down the stretch to secure the 15-10 win.

Cale Punzel (5 strikeouts, 2.2 innings), Cartier Mueller (2 strikeouts, 1.1 innings) and Sam Rossi (2 strikeouts, 2 innings) all pitched for Iron Mountain.

Doers led the way offensively with five RBIs on a 3 for 3 day at the plate. Copiskey and Rossi each had two RBIs while Porier added one. Helminen, Rossi and Punzel each drew two walks.

Kingsford Opener

Kingsford started its 2024 District 10 tournament off against Escanaba in the late game on Friday, picking up an 18-3 victory.

Kingsford opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single from Connor Chrisman. It also added two more runs in the frame to take a 3-0 lead.

Escanaba scored two in the bottom of the first and trailed 3-2 going into the third. That’s where Kingsford took control.

Dylan Fortier increased Kingsford’s lead with an RBI double which Griffin Johnson followed with an RBI double of his own. Then Kingsford drew six straight walks with two outs and the lead ballooned to 9-2.

Kingsford scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the sixth to lock up the win.

Chrisman (8 strikeouts, 4 innings), Parker Pietrantonio (1 strikeout, 1 inning) and Fortier (3 strikeouts, 1 inning) all took the mound for Kingsford.

Offensively, Johnson, Chrisman and Maddox Paoli each had two RBIs. Fortier, Owen Pericolosi, Pietrantonio, Will Rice and Brodie Daffron each had one RBI. Pietrantonio led Kingsford with three stolen bases.

Second Game

Kingsford continued its offensive dominance against Schaffer on Saturday en route to a 14-0 four-inning win.

Kingsford scored three runs in the first, six in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth on 10 hits.

Fortier (4 strikeouts, 2 innings) and Pericolosi (5 strikeouts, 2 innings) pitched for Kingsford.

Pietrantonio’s five RBIs led the way while Fortier was close behind with four. Johnson, Pericolosi, Chrisman and Wes Steber each had one.
