Knights rally past Ironwood
NORWAY — Don’t look now, but the Norway girls varsity tennis team is undefeated.
The Knights continued their impressive start on Tuesday with a 6-2 win over Ironwood at Marion Park. They are 3-0 on the season.
“I am very proud of the team’s effort thus far,” Norway head coach Cassandra Gustafson said. “Our conditioning is paying off in these long, three set matches, and the team as a whole is focused and determined to make their mark. We have a fairly young team and so it’s exciting to see them succeed.”
Ella Wojtocivz led the way for the Knights in No. 2 singles. She defeated Breanna Freeman, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 3 singles, Tori Trudeau toppled Ironwood’s Maddy Kane, 6-4, 6-3. Norway also picked up a win in No. 4 singles with Jessa Rossler defeating Otelya Golebraiski, 6-2, 6-0.
Ironwood’s lone singles win came in the No. 1 flight with Jacinta Golebraiski beating Jordyn Moln, 7-5, 6-1.
“Jordyn (Moln) is new to the number one singles spot,” Gustafson said. “She is still learning how difficult and competitive this spot can be, but she is definitely up for the challenge.”
Norway continued its dominance in the doubles flights, picking up three of four.
The Knights’ No. 1 doubles team, Emma Dube and Sadie Powell battled their way to a three-set win, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In No. 2 doubles, Mary Cavagnetto and Kara Stanchina rolled to a two-set win, 6-2, 6-4. Emily Carlson and Myah Gilroy also picked up a win in the No. 3 doubles flight, 6-4, 6-3. Norway’s Marisa Pipp and Marley Balderson dropped the No. 4 doubles contest.
“Our doubles partners are finally starting to gel together as we have mixed some things up from years past and added in some new players,” Gustafson added.
The Knights are back in action today at Marion Park against Escanaba.
