Basanese earns GLIAC honor

HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech junior defensive back and Iron Mountain native Dante Basanese was named the Week 5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

In three seasons in Houghton, this is the first time Basanese has received the honor.

Basanese led the Huskies with eight total tackles along with an interception he returned for 24 yards and a blocked field goal in Michigan Tech's win against Wayne State at Kearly Stadium on Saturday.

Basanese leads the Huskies with 48 total tackles this season, 27 solo and 21 assisted, with two tackles for a loss of five yards.

Through five games, he has averaged 9.8 total tackles per game for Michigan Tech, leading the GLIAC while ranking 10th in the country.

The Huskies welcome Davenport to Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium on Saturday for another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference clash.
