Forest Park downs West Iron
IRON RIVER — Although it was pushed to five sets, the Forest Park varsity volleyball team regained its composure and rallied past West Iron County on Tuesday.
The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s No. 1 ranked team in Division 4 took down the Wykons, 3-2 (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 15-4) in Iron River.
“We started off strong tonight, winning the first two sets quite comfortably,” Forest Park head coach Bobbie Anderson said. “We played with confidence and aggression. However, we lost our way in sets three and four, likely due to becoming overconfident and playing too timid. We struggled to build momentum and found ourselves in survival mode instead of closing out points.”
After picking up the first two sets, the Lady Trojans dropped the next two, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set. While coach Anderson was proud of her players’ resolve, she was also complimentary of the West Iron squad.
“In set five, we regained our momentum and played to our potential,” coach Anderson said. “West Iron did an excellent job covering the court and chasing down every ball; they deserve credit for making a comeback from a two-set deficit. Even though we didn’t perform at our best, I’m extremely proud of our young team for fighting back after losing those two sets, maintaining their mental strength, and finishing strong. We will certainly encounter similar challenges in the future, and I hope this experience will help us grow. Thankful to leave Wykon territory with a hard fought win.”
Senior middle Ellie Ayers led Forest Park with four blocks. She also tallied four kills and two digs.
The Lady Trojans also received contributions from Ava Fischer (12 kills, 1 assist, 12 digs, 3 aces), Harper Anderson (7 kills, 1 block, 7 digs, 2 aces), Evie Anderson (3 kills, 5 digs), Lilly Curnow (8 digs, 2 aces), Tessa Bartoszek (5 kills, 3 digs), Elsie Williams (5 kills, 20 assists, 1 block, 13 digs), Ella Gasperich (1 kill), Vienna Price (14 assists, 4 digs) and Dalaney Wagner (2 digs).
Forest Park is back home today against Munising.
NIAGARA 3, WAUSAUKEE 0
CRIVITZ, Wis. — The Niagara varsity volleyball team gained ground in the Marinette & Oconto Conference race on Tuesday as it picked up wins over Crivitz and Wausaukee.
The Badgers started the day with a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20) over Crivitz and ended things with a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) of Wausaukee.
“Last night was a huge game for us when it came to conference play,” Maryellen Allred said. “We started off timid playing against Crivitz, and because we allowed Crivitz to get a 0-7 lead on us, it was hard to make a comeback for that first set. After that, we were operating like a cohesive unit and our communication on defense and team effort was a major factor in our success. Our preparation and understanding of past mistakes against Crivitz guided us through the night.”
Although the Badgers came out on the winning side of things, it wasn’t without its challenges.
“I had a few girls playing through some injuries and their mental and physical toughness is something I truly admire,” Allred said.

The Badgers also received contributions from Elesia Sweig (2 aces, 1 kill, 23 assists, 10 digs), Rachael Walker (7 aces, 18 kills, 2 blocks, 12 digs), Peyton Allred (6 aces, 10 kills, 2 blocks, 4 assists, 29 digs), Grace Payette (7 aces, 11 digs), Bristol Sanicki (4 aces, 9 kills, 4 blocks, 4 assists, 5 digs), Addison Wheeler (2 kills, 13 digs), Mallory Sanicki (25 kills, 3 blocks, 8 assists, 28 digs) and Alivia Kleikamp (1 block, 2 digs).
