No. 2 Flivvers sneak past No. 1 Maroons

MENOMINEE — As the 2024 football regular season began to shake out, everyone seemingly had their eyes locked on the Week 8 matchup between the UPSSA’s No. 2 ranked Kingsford varsity football team and No. 1 ranked Menominee in Menominee.

Although they fell behind early, the Flivvers rallied to upset the Maroons, 13-12, in a WestPAC – Copper Division clash on Friday.

“Another great defensive performance,” Kingsford head coach Mark Novara said.

With the win, Kingsford locked up the WestPAC crown ending its conference slate at 7-0. On the year, it is 8-0.

Nic Novara led the way for the Flivvers’ offense with two passing TDs and 167 passing yards on a 10 for 15 performance. Trenton VanOss and Gavin Grondin each hauled in a TD.

Grondin ended the game with four carries for 48 yards rushing and with 54 receiving yards.

Defensively, VanOss led the team in tackles with eight.

Kingsford wraps up its regular season schedule on Friday at Flivver Field against Marquette at 6 p.m.

Last week, The Sentinels were the UPSSA’s No. 3 ranked team in 11-player football. They beat Cadillac on Saturday and are now 6-2 entering the contest.

MOUNTAINEERS 42, EMERALDS 21

MANISTIQUE — After three games at Mountaineer Stadium, the Iron Mountain varsity football team took its talents on the road on Friday.

Although Manistique put up a fight, the Mountaineers were too much for the Emeralds to handle as Iron Mountain picked up a 42-21 win.

The No. 4 ranked Mountaineers are now 8-0 on the season.

Offensively, Mountaineers’ senior quarterback Ian Marttila led the way accounting for five TDs. He had two rushing TDs on three carries while adding three passing touchdowns. Marttila was 8 for 11 passing for 113 yards.

Senior running back Alex Jayne continued his dominance on the ground against Manistique, tallying a rushing TD while rushing for 208 yards on 26 carries. He also hauled in a 15-yard TD pass.

Iron Mountain also received offensive contributions from Oskar Kangas (5 catches, 54 yards), Brayden Kassin (3 carries, 31 yards; 1 catch, 20 yards, 1 TD), Aiden Ellis (6 carries, 42 yards) and Evan Copley (1 catch, 24 yards, 1 TD).

Defensively, Bryce Davis led the Mountaineers with eight assisted tackles. He also had three solo tackles. Marttila (2 tackles, 4 assists), Kassin (1 tackle), Ellis (1 tackle), Jayne (1 tackle, 1 interception), Di Saldana (1 assist), Daniel Manier (1 tackle, 3 assists), Adam Krackenberger (3 assists), Alec Haferkorn (3 tackles, 5 assists, 1 fumble recovery), Jake Powell (2 tackles, 3 assists) and Copley (3 tackles, 1 assist) also paced the defense.

Iron Mountain wraps up the regular season portion of its schedule on Thursday against No. 4 ranked Negaunee at Mountaineer Stadium.
