Kingsford pounces on Mosinee for win
IRON MOUNTAIN — Two goals each by sophomore Jack Spreen and senior Jaxon Buckley fueled Kingsford to a second straight win, as the Flivvers overpowered Mosinee in a non-conference varsity hockey contest Tuesday evening at Mountain View Ice Arena.
“It was a real good effort by everybody,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “I’m super pleased with our puck management, puck movement. We put together three good periods for sure.”
Kingsford, on the short end of a 5-2 decision at Mosinee a year ago, wasted no time in this one, scoring twice on the power play in the first period and building a 3-0 advantage before Mosinee got on the board. The visiting Indians committed eight penalties in the game, four of those coming in the first period.
Spreen put Kingsford up 1-0 early, cashing in unassisted on one of those power plays at 4:37. The score jumped to 2-0 less than two minutes later with junior defenseman Will Murvich connecting on another power play at 6:26, with an assist from senior defenseman Evan Moyer.
The Kingsford lead advanced to 3-0 in the second when Buckley broke away and buried one lower right corner, getting a feed from senior Jake Crockford on the play.
For a second straight contest, Wadge had senior Gavin Moore back on defense, and the effect showed with the quick puck movement out of the zone, and several breakaway chances for the Flivvers offense.
“Having Gavin back there (on defense), he makes some good reads and he’s super fast getting it out of the zone, so that helps,” Wadge noted. “I thought our forwards were really good. Spreen had a great night, and Bucks, he had three good periods. It was a good all-around effort from everyone.”
Mosinee senior Jackson Lindell put the visitor’s on the board at 4:08 of the second, ripping one from the right circle short side over the shoulder of Kingsford junior goalie Nate Scullon with an assist from junior Tyler Baars.
Spreen answered that at 12:57 of the second, busting free as Kingsford was shorthanded and ringing one around the base of the net, unassisted.
Kingsford had just four penalties in the game but found themselves with a two-man disadvantage late in the second.
A hold with 5:09 to go followed by a hooking call with 3:39 to play gave the guests 30 seconds with the two-man advantage. The Flivvers fought that off and the remainder of the power play, only to see Mosinee connect shortly after Kingsford returned to full strength to make it 4-2 with a minute to go in the second.
Buckley, however, regained Kingsford’s three-goal lead at 12:05 of the third, unassisted on another breakaway chance.
Scullon finished with 15 saves, as the Flivvers outshot Mosinee 43-17. The Flivvers have fired 81 shots over the past two games combined.
Kingsford is idle for the holiday weekend before heading up to Houghton to face Jeffers at Michigan Tech’s John Macinnes Student Ice Arena on Tuesday at 6 p.m. A home game versus Manistique was added for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and the Flivvers will now head to Sault Ste. Marie for a single contest on Saturday, Dec. 7, at noon.
