HOUGHTON — Finding offense against Jeffers has been a challenge for any team so far this varsity hockey season, and Kingsford was no exception.

The Flivvers fell 5-1 to the undefeated Jets Tuesday evening at the John MacInnes Student Ice Center on the campus of Michigan Tech.

Senior Captain Gavin Moore netted Kingsford’s only tally, going coast to coast unassisted on a power play in the opening minutes of the second period to bust a scoreless tie, but the Flivvers (2-2-0) could do no more against the Jets (5-0-0), despite opportunities with a total of 25 shots and seven power play chances.

Moore’s goal held till late in the second period before Jeffers erupted for three goals in a less than four-minute span to take command of the contest, the first two of those coming on rebound chances for the Jets.

“We had a really good first period, but the second wound up the exact opposite,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “Jeffers came out with some extra intensity (in the second period), and they are a structured team. They move the puck well.”

Seniors Cody Turner and Benton Rajala each scored twice for the Jets. Turner knotted the game at 1-1 with six minutes to play in the second, knocking in his own rebound of a shot that Kingsford junior goaltender Nate Scullon initially blocked with his chest but was unable to corral.

Rajala added the go-ahead marker two minutes and 20 seconds later, tapping in a loose puck in front of the net. Turner and Rajala each added power play tallies in the third to help put the game out of reach. Senior Brit Heinonen assisted on three of the Jets’ five goals.

Junior Brogan Turner recorded Jeffers’ other goal, an unassisted wrap-around effort to cap the three-goal surge late in the second frame.

The Jets have dominated opponents in scoring 38-5 with two shutouts over their first five games. Kingsford became the first team to hold a lead against the Jets after the first period, but they couldn’t keep the momentum.

“I just don’t know if we fully believe in ourselves yet,” Wadge said. “If we play the way we are capable of playing, like our forecheck was real good tonight, if we play like we can play, I feel that’s a one-goal hockey game. But credit Jeffers. They put pucks on the net and they get rebounds.”

Scullon finished with 26 saves of Jeffers’ 31 shots. Jets goalie Kasen Heiminen stopped 24 shots.

Up next for Kingsford is a home game against Manistique today at 5:30 p.m. at Mountain View Ice Arena. The game was a late addition to the schedule, along with a Saturday contest at Sault Ste. Marie. The Emeralds come to town at 0-3-0, which included a 6-0 loss to Jeffers to open the season. Manistique has been outscored 18-2 so far this season.
