HOUGHTON — The Kingsford High School swim team, in its first full meet of the season, captured 19 U.P. Finals qualifying times from 11 swimmers and split with Houghton Tuesday afternoon at the Houghton High School pool.

The Kingsford girls, boosted by wins in 2-of-3 relays and 7-of-9 individual events prevailed 101-79.

The boys, a little shorthanded with 12 swimmers to Houghton’s 19, fell 94-83.

“The team as a whole swam really well, a lot better than I expected,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said.

“Most were at or near their finishing times from last year.”

Senior Sierra Scott and freshmen Allison Deuter each posted two individual wins with U.P. qualifying times for the Kingsford girls.

Scott won the 200 Individual Medley (2:42.96) and 100 butterfly (1:12.79).

Deuter took first in the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 27.50 and 1:00.10.

Other U.P. qualifiers for the Kingsford girls included junior Marley Dixon with a second in the 200 freestyle (2:35.76), senior Petra Kaad with a third in the 100 free (1:08.20), and Aubree Peterson with a win in the 100 backstroke (1:16.99) and a second in the 200 IM (2:44.86).

Dixon also posted a win in the 500 free (7:06.64), and sophomore Ella McLean was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.37).

Kingsford’s relay wins came in the 200 medley by junior Elena Nelson, McLean, Scott and Deuter in 2:13.00, as well as the 200 free swam by Scott, McLean, Peterson and Deuter with a time of 1:55.15.

“I was impressed with our girls winning 9-of-12 events and being able to overcome the lack of diving that gave Houghton an extra 10 points we could not match,” Lindstrom said.

For the boys, senior Joey Lundholm collected wins and U.P. times in the 200 IM (2:13.83) and 100 fly (57.79).

Junior Sam Lamirand won the 100 free (58.84) with and posted another U.P. time with a second in the 100 backstroke (1:14.78).

Freshman Bryce Johnson won the 100 back (1:08.66) and secured an additional U.P. qualifying swim with a second in the 100 fly (1:08.89).

Sophomore Thomas Gibbons registered U.P. times with a third place effort in the 200 IM (2:34.71)) and a second in the 100 breast (1:13.98), and senior Justin Larson’s third in the 100 back (1:17.47) was also a U.P. qualifier.

“Houghton has some really fast boys and we were actually pretty well matched but again, without divers, we were 10 points down to start with,” Lindstrom said. “Houghton is a very young team with lots of promise, I know Coach Johnson will have them really competitive by the end of the year.

“When they come here in January there will be some really close races. These two teams bring out the best in each other.”

The Flivvers compete next at Manistique on Dec. 10.

That’s before a string of three home meets in a row with Marquette (Dec. 12), Ishpeming (Dec. 17) visiting before Christmas, and Westwood heading down on Jan. 7.

Starting at $2.99/week.
